I'm confused by the category of "open" events. Who can do these? is there an age limit? e.g., can a 12 yo do a senior open event? Thanks for clarifying

Fencers need to be 13 years or older to participate in Open (Senior event). The US Fencing Athlete's Handbook has a table of the requirements for the different categories of tournament on Page 20.

More specifically, they must be 13 years or older by December 31st of the fencing calendar. So if your child is currently 12 but will turn 13 on Dec 31, they can fence in an Open event. :)
