I dont think we should use the term veteran when referring to fencers over 40. That term is especially reserved for those that serve in the military. I served as peace corps instead.
I quit military before entering training in 1972. I changed my mind. I wanted nurses training but realized it was a mistake. I would never refer to myself as military or veteran without having actually served.
Do you think its appropriate to use the term veteran for a fencing category? Especially now that so many vets need real attention?

Just use the word "VET" and not "Veteran".

Thank you for your service. When reffing service academy cadet epees, they give me a push-up at tournament's end for every touch received, while I do one to their two. We do one additional for our fallen brothers.

If you fence and are military it makes sence. But I'm not military and feel uncomfortable with a vet designation. The youth categories use Y16 etc, I would feel more comfortable with S40, S50, S60 etc.

I’m not military and I am perfectly comfortable with it.
You can be a ‘veteran’ of many things.

The military doesn’t own the word.
