I'll be going to Slovakia for about a month, and I would like to know what I would need to know and do to be able to referee fencing while there. For the record, I am a USFA rated referee (10 in foil, 8 in epee, 10 in sabre).

Has anyone ever refereed a fencing event in a country outside one's own? Would I need to contact the Slovak Fencing Federation about my status, or would I just contact the specific clubs I'm interested in refereeing at? Would it be acceptable to direct the bouts themselves in French (I know very little Slovak)?

    Thank y'all very much!

I'd say yes to contacting the Slovak federation. All in French would likely be acceptable, since that IS the language of the sport.

Your ref ratings might be an issue...they're pretty low by US rating standards. Make sure you let the Slovaks know that.

Julius and David Kralik in the Slovakian federation will be able to help you. They're good guys and very supportive of new referees.
