Is it possible to ferment grapefruit juice? Because I think I just did.

P.S. It's like 1:30 AM, so if this is a stupid thread, I'll realize it tomorrow

Yes, you can. And I do not think it is a good thing to do.
Ever hear of Orange Wine? no. Know why not? Because it does not taste good.

Actually, it tasted alright. I'm sure with a couple drinks, I'd acquire the taste. It's like....seltzer and grapefruit juice, combined, plus that fermented taste.

(And by the way, I'm definately freaking out....I put my USFA card with my stuff, then went upstairs and spent 15 minutes looking for my USFA card. I still have NO RECOLECTION whatsoever of completing that action. I need to go to sleep. Nighty-night.)

Dude! when was the last time you did the dishes? The only time I managed to ferment something like that was the glass of orange juice I left out on the counter and went away for the weekend.

Just as a suggestion, just take the grapefruit juice add a couple of shots of vodka and a splash of seltzer water, and sip. A lot safer.. but don't expect to find it behind the bar if you come over. *shudder* Must taste pretty gnarly ..

my roommate goes through so much grapefruit juice!!!!!

i mean, she drinks it a lot with nothing in it....

but she goes through more over the weekend, because she consistantly uses it to compenate for the fact that she buys really really really cheap vodka.

the kind that comes with a mail in rebate.

A plastic bottle of Ocean Spray Ruby Red was left on the floor of my room for a little over two weeks. That's how it happened.

That's what the inmates in prison use to make "wine". In prison jargon they call it "pruno". That's also why a lot of prison systems severly curtail citrus and stone-fruits (peaches, plums...).

You need to have some yeast in there, to convert the sugars to alcohol. Just letting it go bad isn't enough. What is more likely to happen is for bacteria or mold to thrive. So you probably weren't drinking grapefruit wine, just some nasty vile septic solution.

Once, some apple juice of mine fermented and when I opened it at school it exploded everywhere on me and I got accused of bringing beer to school and I punched the vice principal for being a dirty no good liar.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. If I had drunk part of it before, does my spit have yeast in it or something, maybe? I'm pretty sure it had bacteria in it...

Uh, not unless you had an infection before you drank and backwashed it.

I didn't really make it clear before, so just so you know, I didn't chug it, I took a sip, thought it was bacteria, and dumped it. Then later I thought of fermentation...

By the way, it's funny that I got this many posts out of asking whether or not I can ferment grapefruit juice.

You can, of course. But most fruit wines taste like cough medicine.

However, if you take the extra step of distilling your fruit wine (just boil off the alcohol and let it recondense in another vessel) you often get a tasty and potent brandy. They're out of fashion now, but time was they were common.

Sorry, all you really need is plenty of sugar. However some of the inmates put bread in there and when they have finished a batch, they strain the pulp out. This pulp is called "kicker". When you put it in a fresh batch it cuts the fermentation time down to about 24 hours to get usable(?) alcohol.

Some days are more boring than others.
You could have asked for a plea for world peace and have gotten no response posts. It's a day-to-day thing!

    Besides, grapefruit is interesting! haha

On a tangent, how many people have seen the method of turning cheap vodka to good stuff with a Brita (tm) filter?

Is there any way to TELL whether I fermented it or drank bacteria?
