    Hi, all.

I like to have a significant bend down and left on my foil blades. In the past I never used maragine blades, so bending the cant was easy with a simple lever, usually by using a long wrench with a loop at one end to bind the blade cant and bend it. I have since acquired some lightly used FIE foil blades and purchased a new one from Leon Paul and have had zero success bending the cant. I don't have a lot of tools at my disposal as I'm living abroad without a proper shop. Can somebody suggest some methods for bending higher quality steal without damaging it?

    Thanks!

I think you are right to be careful. The steel is harder and more brittle on the FIE and maranging blades.
I put the tang in my vice but make sure I leave about 1/4” gap between the blade and the jaws. Then I put a pipe over the blade and apply pressure slowly and smoothly. If I try to bend the metal too sharply or too quickly, it will snap.
When I don’t have a vice, I use a pipe and a wrench with a hole in the handle. Of course, I still make sure to leave room for a more gradual bend.
Sometimes, the bend is too gradual and I have to file the grip a bit to get it all the way on.

Yeah, a vise is far preferable to trying to do it with a wrench. If you don't have a vise, step 0 is to find someone with a vise you can borrow. Local armorer, building super, local high school, local junior college shop, there's always someone.

I suggest women. Booze, tobacco and pot are too problematic.

I fear you've got that equation all backwards in terms of risk, sir :)

Booze, tobacco and pot will destroy your health. Women on the other hand will destroy your mind and take your wallet. Pick your vice carefully. And do as I say not as I do.
