Has anyone been able to locate video from this past weekend's foil grand prix in Shanghai? I just read that Itkin came back from a 12-2 deficit against Marini to win 15-14 and man would I love to watch that bout.

There was something of qualifying rounds on the FIE YouTube channel.
Maybe they’ll have some updates eventually.

Having just watched it (thanks, Purple!), it was a great example of really fighting for every touch. It was also a great example of the fact that the current foil timing still sucks (there are way too many misses that everyone feels like should have hit, on both sides).

I remember Nikita when he was a little kid in our middle school events...even then, we knew we were seeing something special.

Barring injury, he'll be making the trip to Tokyo in some manner. This performance now has him ranked #17 in the world.

Miles is the most inconsistent of the current Team, and is just not fencing like a former world champion. The current group of MF fencers ( not on the Team) who have done Senior WC this season have not been impressive, other than Nick, who has been amazing, given his age and relative lack of experience at the Senior level. Decent chance that Itkin will bump MCW off the Team in the next 12 months.

I agree re Miles and consistency.

I thought Nick already bumped miles for PanAms and Worlds this year, tho.

Nick's father, Misha, owns Los Angeles Intl. Fencing Center...Nick's had plenty of on-strip exposure to top intl fencers, which probably helps.

it is curious how many times both fencers seemed to clearly make contact but without a light registering in that bout

There may have been a flat hit that bent the blade, or the circuit wasn't opened for 15ms or more.

True. But fencing at your dad's club, even if he is a former National Junior MF coach isn't the same as handling the pressure of a SWC. Lots of kids with Olympic fencers/coaches as parents have crashed and burned. The current roster of non-Team members who have fenced MF SWC this season are ok, but mostly wannabes and a few oldster hanger-ons. Nick has put himself head and shoulders above them.
