{mosimage}On Sunday, Laura Flessel-Colovic “the Wasp” will start her quest for another gold medal.  Standing in her way are fencers from Canada, China, Hungary, Germany, and her teammate – 2003 World Champion Maureen Nisima.

Looking at the brackets published on the Athens 2004 site, several interesting matches look to occur in the round of 16 and 8 that will shape the gold medal match.

Flessel (FRA) is the #1 ranked fencer and heavy favorite to win the gold, but first she must fight through Canadian Sharraine Mackay and then the winner out of the 4/5 bracket.  She will most likely face Li (CHN), who has placed well in her last 3 events.  This will be Flessel’s most difficult bout and should she win it, will most likely win gold.

On the other side of the bracket is Flessel’s teammate Maureen Nisima.  Nisima won the 2003 World Championships (view a video clip here), but has not turned in impressive results until winning the last event of the season.  Nisima runs hot or cold and will most likely be upset in the round of 16 or 8.

Hormay (HUN) will retain her seed and face the winner of Nisima’s section of the table (I predict Bokel (GER)) and move on to have a shot at the gold.
