US fencer Katherine Holmes took the silver at the 2009 Cadet World Championships in the women’s epee event.  Holmes (15, Washington, DC) lost to Budai (HUN) 15-10 in the gold medal bout.  Holmes had defeated Italian Camilla Batini in the semi final round. 

{sidebar id=1}In the gold medal bout, the score was knotted at 9-all when Budai went on a scoring run at got to match point at 14-10 before closing it out on a single light action.

On her way to the finals Holmes knocked off the #4 seed Yulia Bakhareva (RUS) 10-9 in overtime.  (Matches that are tied at the end of 9 minutes of regulation fencing go to a one minute sudden death overtime.)

Holmes was a finalist for the 2008 Sports Illustrated Kid of the Year contest and took 3rd at the US National Championships at the cadet, junior, and senior levels while also winning the Y14 championship.  (You can find her official athlete profile at: http://fencing.teamusa.org/athlete/athlete/2877)
