Lorenzo Nista took the world cadet men’s foil crown with a comfortable 15-10 victory over compatriot Edoardo Luperi in the all-Italian final. US fencer Alex Massialas took bronze after losing to Nista in the final four 10-15. Luperi made it to the final by defeating Germany’s Andre Sinita 15-10.

In the round of 8 the American met up with Garozzo who came out of the preliminary round as the #1 seed for the direct elimination table.

The cadet men’s foil tournament featured a number of upsets in the round of 32. The blog site for the event reported:

The first round of elimination produced few major surprises with most of the top seeds making their way into the last 32. Among the upsets were 53rd seed Volodymyr Stadnyk (UKR) defeating 12th seed Mate Hari of Hungary with a nail-biting 14-13 win at time and Dutch 11th seed Max Janssen succumbing to 54th seed Robin Pfefferkorn (AUT) 15-12.

Combined with the silver medal from Katherine Holmes in cadet women’s epee, the US now holds the 2nd in the medal count with 6 medals (2G, 2S, 2B) behind Italy with 7 (1G, 1S, 5B).
