New York World Cup: Sabre Pools

The preliminary matchups are set for the beginning of the 2010 New York Fencing World Cup on Friday, June 18th.  The top fencers in the New York World Cup for men’s and women’s sabre will sit out the action on Friday and watch (or wait) as the rest of the field battles it out in preliminary pools and elimination matches to get to fill out the field of 64 for Saturday’s direct elimination event.

World Cup Format:

At a fencing world cup, the top 16 fencers receive byes to compete in the direct elimination (DE)  table on the second day of competition.  Those fencers who are the 17th and lower ranked fencers out of those competing all fence in preliminary pools.  In pools fencers fence 5 touch bouts instead of the 15 touch bouts contested in elimination matches.

After the pools are complete, the top 16 fencers from the pools qualify directly for the 2nd day and will fill out the 17th-32nd slots in the DE table.  The remaining fencers are left to fence their own DE table until there are 32 fencers left.  Those fencers move on to day 2 in the 33rd – 64th slots.
