United States Fencing LogoU.S. fencers were globe-trotters last weekend, competing at Senior, Junior and Cadet World Cups all over Europe. The result: Two golds and three top-three World Cup standings.

Mariel Zagunis (18, Beaverton, Ore.) garnered her second World Cup junior gold in a row, winning the Women’s “A” Cup in Ariccia, Italy and retaining her #1 junior world ranking. Zagunis also won the Junior “A” World Cup in Louisville a few weekends ago. Right behind her in the #2 position is Emily Jacobson (17, Dunwoody, Ga./Nellya Fencers), who placed ninth at this competition.

The U.S. dominated this competition, placing four fencers in the final eight. Rebecca Ward (13, Beaverton, Ore.) won the bronze, and Caitlin Thompson (16, Beaverton, Ore.) and Emma Baratta (19, Somerville, N.J.) finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Kamara James (19, Jamaica, N.Y.) gave herself a nice birthday present – she won the gold at a Junior “A” women’s epee competition in Palermo, Italy and turned 19 on the same day. James is now third in the world junior standings. Amy Orlando (18, Beaverton, Ore.) also reached the final in this competition, finishing eighth.

Brendan Meyers reached the final of his first European World Cup, a Junior “A” in Madrid, Spain. He finished fifth, and has moved up to ninth in the World Junior standings.
