Advance -

The basic forward motion of the fencer completed when both feet have 
moved forward and the fencer has returned to the on-guard position.

Appel -

A loud stomp or slap on the piste using the front foot.

Patinando -

A loud stomp or slap on the piste using the rear foot.

Attention -

The position a fencer assumes to deliver a salute at the beginning and end 
of a competition, characterized by standing straight with squared shoulders,
placing the feet at a right angle, with the weapon arm and leg directed
towards the opponent, and with the weapon arm fully extended while
directing the point of the weapon towards the ground in front of the fencer.

Foible -

The top third of the blade above the bell guard.  Also called the "weak" 
part of the blade.

Medium -

The middle third of the blade above the bell guard.

Forte -

The section of the blade between the bell guard and the middle portion of
the blade.

SIMPLE ATTACKS -

A simple attack is one which comprises one blade movement and scores in
the same or different line in one period of fencing time.

DIRECT Attack -

An attack which scores in the same line as the original.

INDIRECT Attack -

An attack which finishes in the same or different line by passing under or
over the opponent's blade.

Disengage Attack -

An attack which scores in the opposite line to the original by passing around
the guard deceiving a lateral movement of the opponent's blade.

Cutover Attack -

An attack which scores in the opposite line to the original by passing around
the point deceiving a lateral movement of the opponent's blade.

Opposition Thrust -

A thrust delivered with pressure against the opposing blade, or wile closing
the line of an anticipated counter attack.

Glide -

In footwork, a smooth distance stealing move.  After a half advance, the front 
foot glides forward, brushing the ground, then the rear foot advances.  Booth 
feet finish at the same time.

Passe Avant -

In footwork, an advance or retreat by crossing one leg over the other. Also 
known as a forward cross
