"How I Started Fencing": Reluctantly joined his high school team as a freshman when a friend encouraged him to sign up. When he put the gear on and fenced, he ended up beating the captain of the team that first day.
Strengths: Jon is one of the most passionate fencers in the country. He is also a very strategically focused athlete who plays the game brilliantly. He has kept a journal of every single bout he has fenced for the past eight years – practice and competition.
“There are so many different layers to the sport. You can win one way one day and never the same way again. The higher you go, the more self-exploration you do and you find out what works for you.”
Did You Know? Jon played competitive youth tennis before trying fencing. Jon didn’t take his fencing very seriously until the summer of his sophomore year when he was kicked out of a summer camp. As a result, the only activity he was allowed to do was fencing; he began to love the lessons and started to excel by age 17, reaching the Junior National team.
