Ultralight Sabre Guard

Product Details

Lightweight version of fully insulated S99 guard. It has copper rivets to distinguish it from our standard guard. Leon Paul was the first company to use aircraft grade aluminium alloy to produce lightweight guards. Unlike other lightweight guards ours are heat tempered after forming to give them a hard yet springy quality that gives them their increased durability. Our lightweight sabre guards are 37% lighter than our standard guards. After testing guard designs made from a single piece of material we have found that after heavy use the guard starts to wear away where it is in contact with the tang of the blade. All our guards are reinforced at the tang with a second layer of aluminium and our lightweight guards have copper rivets to distinguish them from our normal range.

Summary: Very light
April 5th, 2007
On the plus side the guard is really light and feels great combined with a light blade.

Unfortunately the edges do tend to "chip" fairly easily over a few weeks and as a result you're left with a lovely sharp serrated edge!

Other than the edge the guard is very durable and keeps its shape better than some of the "heavyweight" guards.

With a rolled edge this would be the perfect guard.

Summary: Light, but fragile
March 18th, 2007
I know some people who love these guards, and use them excusively. However, they only last about a year, so they have to replace them like they were disposable. Invariably, they break at the bottom third by the pommel after crashing into another fencer's guard a sufficient number of times.

On the plus side, they're light. Honestly though, I can't tell if they're any lighter than the average Leon Paul guard when I'm fencing with them.

I would just stick with the regular guards.

Summary: Good
December 16th, 2005
I bought this guard about a month ago, and I have to admit that I had absolutely no problem with the guard. The guard is slightly lighter than the \"normal\" ones, a slight advantage.

On that note, I think the guard is pretty durable. Of course it has some scratches, but as you all know, they are inevitable. I fenced a beginner once and got a few guard-locks, but it certainly did not break

Summary: shockingly poor
November 5th, 2005
i was using the Pod sabre with this guard the first day i got it and it was just destroyed. its still useable, but there are dents like everywhere. think of the hulk punching a huge metal door and you'll get some kind of picture. some parts of the edges has become jagged, so i had to grind em off for safety reasons. hugely disappointed...even my cheaper sabre guards handle more things than this.
