Ayach Bounachada is not one to shy away from a challenge. As the Manitoba Fencing Association's new provincial coach, the 40-year-old Algerian is sure to have his hands full.

"To me, it's a big challenge," he said yesterday during the annual Cavalier Open fencing competition at the Manitoba Fencing Centre at the Winnipeg Technical College. "Fencing is really developed in Quebec. It's one of the best provinces in Canada (for fencing). That's because the best coaches stay in Quebec, especially the foreign coaches.

"So for me coming here to a province where fencing is not really developed as in Quebec, as in some places in the United States, (the challenge) is to make this sport second or first in the future."
