On their way to the semifinals, the U.S. women defeated Puerto Rico 45-25 and France 45-42. In the match for the bronze, the U.S. team beat Poland soundly, 45-29.

In the final, the Ukrainian team staged a 45-32 upset of the Russians to win the gold.

In the men's foil competition, the U.S. team of Nicholas Chinman (17, Boulder, Colo.), Ariel DeSmet (16, Portland, Ore.), Gerek Meinhardt (16, San Francisco, Calif.) and Ben Parkins (17, The Woodlands, Texas) placed fifth in a huge field of 33 teams.

The U.S. team was seeded fifth going into the competition. They easily defeated the team from Kuwait 45-17, and then downed Germany 45-36 before falling to the team from China 45-28.
