WEDS., 11 APRIL, BELEK, TURKEY -- Day Two of the 2007 Cadet and Junior World Championships brought another medal for the U.S. Daryl Homer, a 16-year-old rookie to the Cadet team from New York, won a bronze in the Cadet (Under-17)
Men's Saber event.

Teammate Harrison Mahaffey (16, Los Angeles, Calif.) also had a great day, finishing in the top 8. Mahaffey had a great run to the quarterfinals, defeating 6th-seed Maciej Regulewski of Poland 15-9 before losing his bid for a medal to France's Vincent Couturier 15-9.

Aleksander Ochocki (16, Clark, N.J.) lost a painful 15-14 match to the eventual gold medalist, Boris Savich of Russia. But for that single touch, Ochocki might well have stood among the top eight with his teammates.

In the Cadet (Under-17) Women's Epee competition, the 2006 World Champion, Courtney Hurley (16, San Antonio, Texas), lost her bid to defend her title, but Neely Brandfield-Harvey (16, Houston, Texas) reached the round of eight.

Brandfield-Harvey, seeded #52 after the initial rounds, upset the #13 seed Karin Louise Hooge of Denmark 15-8 in the round of 64 and continued on to reach quarterfinals before being defeated by Brenda Briasco of Italy 15-13.

Hurley's day ended with a loss in the round of 16 to Violetta Kolobova of Russia, 15-10, who was seeded 14th after the initial round. Kolobova went on to win the gold.

Susannah Scanlan (16, St. Paul, Minn.) lost her match in the round of 32 to Anfisa Pochkalova of Russia 15-7.

Cadet events conclude Thursday with the Under-17 Women's Foil and Under-17 Men's Epee events.
