FIE Halts Visor Mask Requirement

Following an incident in which a foil punctured the FIE transparent visor mask, the FIE has removed their required use at FIE competitions.

The International Fencing Federation (FIE) announced that the use of the transparent visor masks would no longer be required at foil events pending an investigation into the causes of an accident where a foil broke through the Lexan protective plate during a foil bout at the European Junior Championships.

Fencing Referee App for iPhoneScorecounter is the free fencing referee application for the iPhone and iTouch developed by Fencing.net user Gary Hayenga. It maintains all the basic essentials one needs to referee a bout: an adjustable stopwatch with both 1 and 3 minute resets, the ability to track yellow and red cards, and a counter for the score of both fencers (as the name of the app would imply).

Andrew is back again with another video mashup.  This time it is Marti of Spain and his slow attack that receives a bit of analysis.  This video focuses on Marti's sabre attacks from the first zone (in the en garde "box") and how he uses changes in his own action tempo to make the slow attacks effective.

How US Team Captain Jeff Bukantz sold the story of fencing to Showtime.


In 2008, the film crew for Bud Greenspan Presents: America's Olympic Glory, was in Beijing at the fencing venue, this time hoping to capture a story of redemption for Sada Jacobson as she tried to move from Athens Bronze to Beijing Gold.

What they ended up with was a story of redemption and hope, but from a somewhat unexpected corner.

An 11-4 run from Rares Dumitrescu in the final bout shuts down Italy's Aldo Montano and gives Romania the world championship gold in the men's team sabre competition.  The US men finished 7th.

In the women's epee competition, Italy dominated Poland to win 45-31 with the US team finishing 10th.
