What's a log boom? Is that some form of weird Canadian ship? Is that how Canadians traverse the oceans?

You, sir, have never watched the Beachcombers. 
It's, uh... a clump of logs that float together in the water. Not sure of much past that except they're pretty cool. I think they float the logs on the water like that because it's easier to move them up and down the coast that way than loading them onto trucks and hauling them.
Hmm... FG? Any thoughts?
