| Cracking When you crack you knuckles, back, neck etc. What is creating that cracking sound anyways? Someone told me it's air being released but I don't buy that. Where does the air go then right? |

| Your joints contain what is called sinovial fluid, which is like grease in a mechanical joint. Nitrogen is dissolved in this fluid; when you crack your knuckles, you spread them, which decreases the pressure on the sinovial fluid, causing some of the nitrogen to come out of solution. As to where it goes...well, I'd imagine it stays out of solution, in your joint, for a short time before the joint returns to normal, and the increased pressure forces the nitrogen back into solution. That's why you can't crack your knuckles twice in a row. |

| It also has no negative effects on the body, and does not lead to arthritis. So crack away!

| Master, I have this bad habit. Can you site any professional opinons that prove your statement? I would hate to have my habit justified by someone who has no proof to back it up.

| According to this site http://science.howstuffworks.com/question437.htm
there has only been one published study done correlating joint damage to knuckle cracking. The result is that there is no apperent relation between joint cracking and arthritis but there is evidence of other kinds of damage.

| Soldiers assessment of the cause of the noise is 100% correct. Master is also correct. Although some of those with a very enthuiastic cracking style may develop mechanical problems related to hyperextension of the joint causing cartilage damage conective tissue weakening and grinding of bone on bone.
