Blue or gold

Are the gold BF's any different then the blue ones , and if so how in terms of stiffness and durability.

Same exact blade, one is blue "painted", the other gold. Both reduce rust and provide a little conversation piece for your $5.00 extra.

Just out of curiousity I ordered one of both, the paint job is actually pretty poor, I assumed as you are that the blueing would be the quality of blueing on a gun, not even close. I can't feel any difference so far.

In my experience, at least with the épée blades, the BF blues are much stiffer than the the BF gold blades. They are also slightly heavier. It has nothing to do with the color, it's tied to the shape and size of the x-section. They may have different heat treatments, but I can't say for sure.

If also found that the gold blades last longer although they bend more easily. This observation is made after years of paying for various replacement blades for my son. However, the oldest blade in his collection of weapons is a gold BF.

As Paolo noted, the gold ones tend to soften up more than the blues (which in turn soften up more than the 'white' BF blades).
The main funcition of the colored finish on BF blades is to allow the different blades to be readily told apart in stock.

If the Blue BFs soften up LESS and are stiffer than the golds i don't think the blue's i'd be ordering would be legal. I use the triplette gold BF blades and they run.... rather stiff. I happen to like the golds over the blues and whites. The normal blades rust more easily and i just don't trust the blues (i knew someone who had one. Great blade, but it broke in less than 3 months.)
