| A friend of mine dug up one of these grips in a box of old gear belonging to his college fencing team. Haven't a clue what they are called though. Unfortunately, this grip is illegal, as it is designed to be gripped in multiple positions. Read the USFA rules on grips to confirm this. Pretty cool though.

| Re: awesome grip Ahhh! The pommel-gripping epeeist's Holy Grail. If it were only legal...
Actually, I'm not sure if it would really convey a distinct advantage. However, I'm afraid if I tried one, I'd like it and want to use it.

| I've held one of those before, and not even being a pointy-weaponist myself I liked it. Shame it's illegal

| The handle is a version of the Gardere. It appears to be a more extreme one. On the Leon Paul site, you find some that are not as extreme and are much easier to hold at multiple length.
In fact many many years ago a well known fencer tried to use an epee with two of those handles end to end. They had welded on an extension to the tang. It didn't fly.

And what the h**l is an "American Grip"? | There are Italian grips, Visconti grips and German grips. The Visconti is similar to the German. The easiest way to tell them apart by quick glance is to look at the back. The German are flat and wide. The Visconti are thin and pointy. There are other differences such as the German has more pronounced grooves and the bottom are angled slightly more back.
You can see pictures in the American Fencers Website or these and the Italian. http://www.amfence.com/html/grip_pics.html

| The american grip that I used to use looks like the one shown without the pistol handle decender, leaving just the top and bottom hooks.
Think of the first stage of orthopedic grips added on to a french grip. Now I am in the state of full orthopedic grips, using the XL Belgian from Triplette.
