    Fencing with glasses...

... rather while wearing glasses! For those fencers who do wear glasses, do you fence with your glasses on?

Do you have a problem with them fogging up during a bout?

If fogging is a problem, what can be done about it?

I used to fence with glasses on, but they tended to slip down my nose or move around during a bout, which makes it pretty hard to concentrate on your fencing.

I moved to contacts as soon as I could - much better in all respects.

If you have to use glasses, then you should look into getting the 'anti fog' spray that they sell in the paintball section of the sporting goods stores. That will help with the fogging-up of your glasses. (Just make sure it won't hurt any coatings on your lenses, etc.)

    Cheers,
    Craig

I have to. Blind as a bat without them.

I always wear a strap when I'm fencing, but haven't had a fogging problem in a couple of years. Don't know why, but i'm not complaining!

However, because of the glasses, I always put on my mask chin first, and remove it head first. I never do the "welder's mask" routine because I'd jam the frames against my nose!

i wear glasses and they never fog up. i do have to carefully take my mask off though but that is also because i wear a bandana to keep the hair out of my eyes. have to do it the "welder" way. the tongue that fits over the back of the head prevents me from using any other meathod.

I tried wearing my glasses, but had the fog problem. Guess I just get too hot. Fortunately I only need to use them to see close up so it's not a problem for me to take them off for fencing. Lucky me!

I wear glasses while fencing, using a strap to hold them on. I used to have a fogging problem, but I solved it by moving to smaller glasses (this allows more airflow under the glasses as the brows aren't blocked off). I now don't even notice my specs, and I sweat like a great big sweaty thing when I fence.

I have always worn glasses when i fence, I can't see otherwise. Now I do need a larger mask and sometimes have the fogging problem, bu the fogging problem can be handled by using a headband. Also it is a really good idea to always carry an extra pair(it hard to drive home when you can't see the car let alone the road).

Apparently spreading a little shampoo on your lenses can help (my husband used to have fogging problems with his lenses, but - for some reason - it doesn't tend to happen any more) - a bit like scuba goggles...

Thanks everyone for the tips! Thanks Craig for the tip about anti-fog spray at the paintball stores, I went to a local one and found this kind called Kleer Vu Anti-Fog spray. This stuff works great! I have small glasses as well and have picked up a strap to help hold them in place. The anti-fog spray works great, I can breath on my lenses and there is not even the slightest hint of fog, where before the application they fogged up so you couldnt see through them.

    Thanks Everyone!

If you put a little dab of shampoo or liquid shower soap on a bandana, rub it on your glasses, then rub it off again with a dry part of the bandana, it works as well as any special spray.

A croakie is really useful--and if you have small glasses, you can do the welder mask thing, tilt the mask up on the top of your head, and tip it back down again, which increases your cool quotient.

Small glasses also allow you to rip your mask off and celebrate after a good touch. (After the director has made his decision of course... ).

    Regards, Mark Ray

I don't see why you'd have to go out of your way to a paintball shop to get anti fog spray, every place I've gone to that has sold glasses had some available to buy.

I tried all of the eyeglass places around my area (EGF, Pearlevision, DOC, etc) NONE of them had anything like it! I would have thought they did. But the paintball place wasnt really out of my way, just that I had not thought of it!

While I dont Scuba, I do have friends who do, and they suggested their method, but I prefer the spray!

Strange..are you in some totally arid state like Arizona where there might not be that good a market for it? I notice online Zivkovic sells bottles of anti fog spray also.

    MikeHarm-

Nope, actually I live in Michigan! The only thing I found that any of the eyeglass places near me had was this lens cleaner that they claimed was also anti-fog. It didnt work like they said. This stuff that I have now is strickly anti-fog and works great! I put it on my lens and it lasted for 2 days, probably would have lasted longer than that but I wipe my glasses frequently! Dont ask me why none of the places carried it, even the places that sold special sports glasses didnt have anything to compare to this!

You should be able to find anti-fog stuff at a sports store in the swimming goggles section or the ice hockey section.

I used to fence without any kind of eyesight aid. I'm pretty short sighted so it was kind of dumb. Nowadays, I wear contacts and I have no problems. Everyone I know who wears glasses doesn't have problems
