    Need Help in NYC!!

Metropolis in NYC is closed, and I need a new fencing club. Any suggestions? I really liked the informal, friendly atmosphere @ Metropolis, and would be interested in a similar club. Thanx!!

New Amsterdam Fencing Academy is where I go now. It meets four days a week, on Amsterdam Avenue between 96th and 97th. Give it a whirl!

No, no, no! Come to Fencing Academy of Westchester. It would probably be a little more of a drive for you but it's definitely worth it! I drive almost an hour and a half to fence there.

For the most part but the person asking has his/her primary weapon as foil anyway.

Fencers Club is probably a better bet, just because there are SO many good fencers there. FAW is good too, It depends on how much you wanna sepnd I guess. . . I've heard that FC is pretty expensive.

Ha ha. I agree, the initiation fee is rediculous.

So, the New Amsterdam Fencing Academy, eh. Has anyone been to the place? What's it like?
Maybe, perhaps, likely, possibly, probably, potentially.

I started going there, and am now a member. It is epee and foil mainly, though one of the coaches was a competitive sabreur, and it is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than FC. It meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. The floor fee is five dollars, and I would strongly recommend just going one night, Monday seems the biggest, and seeing how you like the feel. Take a lesson maybe, drill with someone, bout around. I tend to go as often on those nights as I can spare time for.

    Good luck in your search

    Fencing in NYC

Thanks for all the suggestions. I will check both of them out. I don't have a car, so Westchester is out, I'm afraid ... I will keep you all informed of my experiences.

    Help in NYC,
listen- FC is great, As is FAW- in terms of how good the fencers are, New amsterdam is quite good as well- though younger. You don't need a car to go to FAW- if you are willing to take a commuter train. There is also Brooklyn Fencing Center. (in carroll gardens, about a block from the F train). You could try all of them first, and see what happens.
    Cheers,
    B.

    NYC Fencing

The Brooklyn club is very limited for me, in terms of when I'm available vs. when they have classes, FC has a ton of evening foil which is great, b/c my schedule changes week to week, but I try to alternate Mondays and Fridays.

You get what you pay for.

Both FC and NYAC are expensive, but they put out Olympic athletes.

The original question was asking for a good, informal, relaxed place... the FC is hardly that most of the time. It's one of the top clubs in the country (if not the best) and it produces olympic caliber athletes. It's the kind of place where if you put in the effort, your possible improvement is almost limitless. There is some pressure there though, and you definitely get more attention from yoru coach/strip time if you are a top competitor, and if your just in it for recreational fencing, it might not be the best place. That said, I love the FC and miss it sorely - it's a phenomenal resource.

Oh, but you are forgetting FAW has the best foil coach in the world: Slava Grigoriev. Elijah's Globe reported Slava as being "Brilliant!", and the Elijah Post was quoted as saying "Slava is just magnificent!". Can't beat that!
