    I have to disagree with one point of pkt's otherwise excellent and detailed analysis:

    9. at the end of the lunge the front thigh and the front calf should form a 90-degree angle any thing greater than 90-degree, you're under-lunging, anything smaller than a 90-degree angle, you're overlunging;
    The 90-degree angle should be between the front calf and the floor. This provides the best foundation for recovering from the lunge.

    The angle between the thigh and calf can and should vary from 90 degrees, depending on how flexible the fencer is. Insisting on a right angle at the knee could risk injury to beginning fencers who don't have that flexibility yet, and discourage more flexible fencers from getting that bit of extra distance.
    Simple, clear purpose and principles give rise to complex, intelligent behavior. Complex rules and regulations give rise to simple, stupid behavior. - Dee Hock

    First learn how to do it PROPERLY. It's part of the DISCIPLINE thing.

    Then you may express your inventiveness - or change it to adapt it to your style.

    JJ,

    I've posted a couple of fotos from the 2003 Habana World Champ Men's Sabre so you can see what the world's top sabreurs are doing lungewise.

    Note in foto #172 the 90-degree angles that formed between the thighs and the calves; the calves and the piste? The rear legs are bent because they're both ready to recover to the on-guard position...

    It goes w/o saying that you need STRONG legs to go from this end-of-the-lunge position to recover to an on-guard position.

    And a couple from FF:
    ~ one to show how NOT to attack; thought the lunge itself is perfect:

    This lunge is not quite finished yet but it obviously SEEMS that the stop hit has gained the RoW...

    ~ ...and one to show how to do it properly - this one is a flying lunge - though the fencer on the left has parried the attack already; now we're just waiting for the riposte to start.

    Too bad in neither of these FF fotos the lights have yet to be lit...

    I hope these help.

    Shouldn't his back leg be straight? Maybe he's just recovering..
