    European Master's Programs

    Hi all,

I am looking for information on programs that train fencers as coaches. I have read about the one in San Jose, though any other impressions on that I would be glad to hear. The ones I have the most trouble learning about, however, are the ones either without websites, or without websites in English. Programs like this that I have heard about but haven't found much info on are one in Hungary, Italy, Berlin, Tauberbischofsheim, and Paris. I am especially looking for first or second hand experiences, for such information as the duration (most seem 2-4 years), how it progressed day-by-day, how much proficiency in the native language is necessary, how many days of the week and year, requirements for entry, cost, etc.

Thanks very much, I appreciate the help.

    Try this in France:
This was the alma mater of the Auriol brothers and other French maitres d'armes. From what I know it's like a Master degree in Physical Education specialising in fencing. In the French prog, one has to learn all 3 weapons, whereas in the Eastern European prog, one does one's own weapon plus one ONLY.

The INSEP is only reserved for high level athletes.

What you are probably looking for in France is the CNFE, which is located in Chatenay-Malabry, near Paris. They do have a program for foreigners to come and learn how to coach here. The program lasts 4 years and takes you from just a fencer to a "Maitre d'Armes". Each year you will take an exam, awarding you the title first of "Initiateur", then "Moniteur", "Prevot" and "Maitre".

They have an additional 5th year that can give you "level 2 Maitre d'Armes" certification.

To attend this program it is required to speak and be comfortable with French.

More information in French is available on the French fencing federation website:
