Acetone pipe question

When capping off the bottom end of an acetone pipe, Neevel said to use a thread compound. My questions is what's a thread compound? Can I use teflon tape or is there something better.

Thanks.

There are various types of thread compounds (teflon tape, is a form of one), but I would recommend soldering on a cap to the tube (if you are using copper). Don't know if the teflon would dissolve in the acetone or not. And seeing as it is 20 deg F and threatening snow, I would love to go outside and see if it would for you. NOT! Sorry, creature comforts trump scientific coureosity at this point. ;-)

My experience has been that teflon tape on the threads is adequate when dealing with steel pipe and a cap (of course a good threading goes a long way by itself).

If you are dealing with copper pipe, which uusally has relatively thin walls, thenuse solder.

It's a paste that typically comes in a tube, sometimes called "pipe dope". It should be located in the same section of the hardware/home-supply store as the pre-cut pipes. You apply it to one portion of the threading and then screw the cap on. Once it has cured, it will make a liquid-tight seal. I've not used teflon, so I can't say if it's acetone-proof or not, but the paste stuff does work.

Thanks all. I have teflon tape at home, but I think I will use this pipe dope stuff, after I get the remaining acetone out of the pipe. BTW- I'm using a steel pipe and not copper.

Mifencer-

in the armory here, we use steel pipe with teflon tape- never had any problems with it.

Except now it needs to be emptied and no one wants to do it. But there's a big ol' gooie blob after 2 years, and... you get the idea.

good luck- the pipes are NICE.
