No. That is not true.
They are covered by copyright, and any display or distribution without the permission of the copyright owner (outside of some fairly narrow exceptions) is a violation of that copyright. The use need not be commercial.
Whether it's something someone will sue over (or send a cease and desist letter) is a different matter--but just because you are not selling it doesn't mean you aren't violating copyright.
