    Nutrition

    Hi all!

First post, discovered this site about a week ago.

I'm curious, what do people usually eat while training for fencing? Standard diets of meat / carbs with low sugar, or something different?

I just go for a solid, simple carbs diet, with a good dose of protein after a harsh workout. I also eat power bars before and during tournaments. Oh, and I try to stay hydrated. That's about it.

Back in the early-mid eighties, I read an article about what the German olympic team ate while training. I was good solid southern type food. Fried meats, potatos, beer, etc. This perfectly fit my ideal and I've stuck with it ever since....

yeah, that's good for eating while training, but at a tournament, you need simpler stuff.

Pastas are great for energy! Eat alot of breads to. And make sure you eat breakfast. And with breakfast either drink tea or coffee(whichever you prefer). Then throughout the rest of the day drink nothing but water or powerades. Then at dinner have plenty of meats and alot of milk. This diet got me through all kinds of tournaments from martial arts to archery. Now im going to apply it to fencing. I try to make sure I get alot of carbohydrates for quick energy. Oh and powerbars are awesome sources of energy! If you can stomach the taste.

=) soda dehydrates you though!!! Decaffinated tea or coffe would be better in the morning, caffeine is bad for your muscles. You learn all this stuff when you run competitively, and meat is a wonderful thing, lots of protein.

Womatoes? You say womayto, I say womarto, let's call the whole thing off...

I used to eat wine gums before rugby matches. You could run about the pitch for ages after those suger-laden, e-number-packed beauties, even carrying the weight of a waterlogged jersey and three tons of good english mud...

Dehydration is generally not a problem in fencing, where you exert yourself in short bursts with plenty of time between pool bouts, much less DEs, to take in fluids. Running is another matter, but one imperative does not fit all sports...

I have been drinking nothing BUT soda as a fencer for a very long time. Zero problems.

As for food, I've never found anything that confers a significant performance edge, or even the illusion of one. I eat whatever I like before, during and after fencing.

I don't drink carbonated beverages, but that has less to do with fencing and more to do with the fact that I don't like them very much. When "training" I pretty much eat whatever, but at tournaments I tend to gravitate towards non-greasy sandwiches and wheat thins.

    Mmm, wheat thins.

    Chocolate and Mountain Dew........

I was actually gulping mini hersey bars at one event prior to a DE bout and some came up to me and mad a comment about how the energy was only temporary and I would crash soon. I said I didn't care as long as I was up for the bout. If I won I would eat more chocolate to keep up. Very short term thinking when it gets to the DEs.

Buat as far as training diets go. Just a standard healthy, well rounded diet is finr.

    Snickers

    I used to eat snickers until I sucked some peices of nuts in to my lungs when I was hurrying to get on strip on time. By the time I finished coughing I was to tired and winded to fence (>;

Just eat very healthily a few days prior-fruits, veggies, lean meats, and whole grains. On the tourny day, eat high-carb stuff in low volume, so you wont feel like you've just had a meal. Personally, I think my homemade banana bread and granola with water are the best thing to have!

and, I dont recommend you having stuff with nuts, seeds or anything that could get stuck in your teeth or otherwise- its very distracting to try to get it out during a DE!
