Div I IS with the rest, but it doesn't really matter, it'll probably get stuck to one end or the other when no one else is there so even WITH them at the same competition it won't be the same part of the week that you're there unless you're also going Div I.

I wouldn't doubt that the Zimmermanns would be at the Summer Nationals in one capacity or another. It is, by the way, just 80 miles from where they're living and going to school.

Ok, folks! This just in from the news desk:

I emailed the USFA (You can too! info@USFencing.org ) and inquired about the schedule for the Sacramento Nationals:

    Hi Jeff
We are expecting the SUmmer Nationals schedule to be available and posted on
    the website after the JOs.

    Best regards
    Sarah
So that's when we should expect to see the schedule for the different events.

If we get a HUGE showing to the nationals this year, it might encourage a near-future reprise. I'd LOVE for the nationals to be here in my home town again soon! Heck, hold 'em here every time! We have great facilities, it's a great town, and we love fencing!

Or maybe a huge showing would convince them to keep them away from you to create more managable field sizes.... Why is it that there haven't been any open NACs in the NorthEast since Pittsburg in '98? The low drawing power that resulted in fields of over 207 and 230 for ME and MF? That's compared to fields which this year in SC and CA have been between 138 and 159 for those events. By your line of reasoning we should have more tournaments up here....

The reasons why a NAC event is held at certain locations fall into the following categories:

    1) Local support. No local support, no dice.
    2) Venue cost. The cheaper the better, hence places like Greensboro NC and such.
    3) Accessibility. If fencers can't get there because it costs an arm and a leg plus six hours by bus (can we say Pittsburgh?), it might discourage future attendance at that particular venue.

While there may be a large number of fencers in the Northeast, it's not clear that too many of those fencers are willing to provide the local support. There was a JOs in 97, I believe in Mass., but that place didn't really meet criteria #3 (and possibly #2, but I wouldn't know).

#2 is why you're not going to see too many NACs in large metropolitan cities like New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The only way to hold events in such cities is to hold it in some outlying city (like Ontario, CA, Newark NJ, Sacramento, CA, or King of Prussia PA). Then, it breaks #3, which only means they won't go back to that place again for a while.

Actually, Ontario, Newark, and Sacramento are all metropolitan enough in that they all have major international airports, so they don't really break #3. That place off of Pittsburgh broke #3 big time, and I'm sure that the relative difficulty in getting to the venue (what was it, 50 miles from Pittsburgh proper?) would scare away those who attended the first time.

Attendance was large at that Pittsburgh NAC for a number of other reasons not having to do with its location.

    Hey guys, quick question:

If you place dead last in qualifiers for the Nationals will you still be able to compete in it? Thanks!

yep... all you have to do is show up for the qualifiers to be able to compete in nationals...im not sure if you even have to show up to the strip for your first bout... just register and be there on the day... but im not sure.

Allow me to clarify this. For team events, Div I (All classifications) and Div II ("C" and under), you must compete the in the divisional qualifier AND finish with a placement high enough to qualify (which is determined by the number of competitors in the overall field). For Div III ("D" and under) ONLY, you must simply compete in the qualifier. ONLY in the Div III quals can you qualify even if you finish all your bouts and don't score a single touch.

As per the ops manual, here are the qualifying paths:

    Div 1-A
    1) top ten finishers in the section championships
    2) current junior sectional champion
    3) top eight from last year's Div 1-A Nationals
    4) top four from last year's div 2
    5) top two from last year's div 3

    Div 2
    1) top 30% finishers of Div 2 qualifiers (minimum of 2 fencers)
    2) top four from last year's Div 3 Nationals

    Div 3
    1) Anyone who fenced in Div 2 qualifiers
    2) Anyone who qualifies for Div 2
    3) Anyone who fenced in the Sectional Championship

Me, I'm debating between div 3 and div 2. I know I'll get blasted in Div 1-A (if by some miracle I actually qualify!) so which would be my best choice?

Why not fence both Div2 and Div3, since you'll be there anyway??

Since I'm usually travelling and paying for hotels and such, I'm going to enter any events that I qualify for.

Forgive my naivete, but can I actually do that? Fence in two divisions simultaneously?

You can enter as many events as you want proviced that you're only fencing one individual event per day. In theory you can fence in Div III, II, IA, AND I all at the same nationals (of course last year IA and III were scheduled in conflict with each other for every weapon IIRC).

It would be pretty funny to fence both Div I and III, but is there anybody who's on the National Pts. list who doesn't have a C?

Right, that makes sense with all the age groups -- when I say points I meant the Sr. National Pts list -- isn't that the way you go to Div I National Championships?

I was SO excited about going to Nationals this year...unfortunately, I can't. When the book came out, all of our plans changed. You guys will have to take lots of pictures (especially of the fencing.net gathering) & tell me all about it.
