    Mafia

Hey everyone, I'm @ a fencing camp and some friends just introduced me to a game called 'Mafia'. Anyone else here heard of it?
I was Mafia, like, 3 times in a row! :P

Here's how I killed my victims: 1. stabbed 'em 8 times with a plastic butter knife 2. Poisoned 'em with mouldy blue jelly 3. (I committed suicide) well, I tried 2 kill myself, but Liz reid saved me

    Cheers, Avril.

haha, that seems to be a big game at fencing camps. A couple years ago I was at a fencing camp in Maine and every night a big group would get together and play it. It's a pretty funny game. =)

ohhhhh i LOVE mafia. no one has heard of it on my team, so i have to teach it to them on our next away meet. for thos who do not know what it is, here is how we play:

lets say there are 28 players. you have a deck of cards:
the 4 kings will be the mafia
    2 aces are the doctors
    2 jacks are the informants
the rest of the cards are number cards, and all number cards are townspeople.
there is also 1 facilitator who manages the game, not determined by a card. this person is picked before the cards are even dealt, because they give cards to the people.
you do not play with the queens, and you take out the useless cards, so in this game of 28 ppl, 20 cards will be number cards, and then there are the 8 special cards.

    to play:
seat all the players in a room, not necessarliy in a circle. it is just easier. the facilitator shuffles the special deck well, then walks around the circle allowing each person to take a card off the top. everyone looks at their card, then after they know their role, the facilitator will walk around the room and collect the cards. they are then set aside.
this is a game played in sequences of sorts. the facilitator (F, from now on) says "everyone go to sleep" and everyone closes their eyes. please don't cheat at this, otherwise it's not any fun. F then says "mafia wake up" and the people who had the kings open their eyes, look around silently and acknowledge each other. they then agree on a person to "kill" by pointing at them, mouthing their names, or indicating with their eyes if needed. Silence is essential. Once they have agreed on a person to "die", F says "mafia go to sleep".
F then says "doctors wake up' and the people who had the 2 aces open their eyes and acknowledge each other. they then choose a person to "save". if they choose the same person as the mafia, that person is saved. The doctors can save themselves. Then F says "doctors go to sleep".
F then says "informants please wake up" and the people with the jacks wake up and see each other, and then they select the person they want to know about, whether they are mafia or not. the F will nod yes or no. their job is to find out who is mafia.
Then the F says "townspeople wake up" and everyone opens their eyes. The F says who has been killed or saved, and then the "trials" are open. the townspeople then try and decide who is mafia. they can make these decisions based on things they hear, like rustling (which is why silence is so important), or alliances with people. you can defend others, but this can also make you seem suspicious...it's lot of politics. Then, the townspeople pick 3 ppl to be formally accused. each person gets a minute to defend themselves, then they must take a vote on who is to be executed. The F then says if they were mafia, or had some other role.
The object of the game is to kill the mafia before they kill the townspeople. once the mafia outnumber the townspeople OR once all the mafia are caught, the game is done.

    I don't think i forgot anything...but if i did, add on. i am a mafia champ. watch out. let's play at JO's.

    *laugh*!!!

What a fun alternative game to the old original werewolf game.

It's nice to know that somes don't die, they just morph into new games. The only differences are that there were only 2 werewolves, two hunters, and the people simply decided to lynch someone every morning!

    hehe... Enjoy

    that sounds really good

this site should have a seperate area for games to kill time during tournies or camps.
Fencing will always be a "for love of the game" sport.

Hearts used to be pretty popular. It might still be actually.

If you see someone running around the venue in adam's eve or someone doing something weird, probably means they've lost a hearts game the night before.
