US Men's Sabre: 5th in Paris

    Full story and results at:
    http://www.fencing101.com/content/view/127/2/

Overview: The US Men's Sabre team placed 5th at the team tournament in Paris. The finish is much better than the 12th place result from World Championships and all but assures the US of the MS team slot for the Americas.

The asian countries seem to be in a perpetual state of hiding their talented fencers from the rest of the world then surprising us.

I'd like to see the tableauxyz for that event.

All I know is that USA beat Italy 45-35 for the 5th place. Some scores and an article (in French) are at this page:

This was my thought on it. East Germany used to do the same thing.

Wow. That's a pretty impressive margin to beat the italians by. Does italy still have montano and tarantino?

    Shrug. Go USA..

You know, these guys sometimes seem like they fence better as a team than as individuals...not entirely true, but I see the chemistry of the PWF guys in a team setting where the stronger guys boost the confidence of the weaker guys..and they're not up against each other.

I've dug out the full tableaux for this world cup: http://www.escrime-ffe.fr/competitio...emlin_sheq.htm

USA lost to Hungary, then went on to beat Germany and Italy with pretty reasonable margins to take the 5th place. I'd say if the US men's sabre team continues to do this, they might get a pretty good spot on the DE table for the OG and could be a serious contender for a medal spot...

Here's the Babelfish translation of the piece from the link from veeco:
    http://www.escrime-info.com/modules...storyid=490#810
I won't vouch for the machine translation. I have yet to read it...

thank you veeco for givng us the team composition as well as the full tableau.

    PK

One will retain like essential facts the return in grace of French and the emergence of China.

The Team of France coached by Christian Peeters was made up of Matthieu Gourdain, Julien Pillet and Damien and Gaël Touya.

For the French, the competition began with the table of 16 versus Thailand with in particular Widarech Kothny (ex-German)[ex-Hungarian? - PK]. The French beat the Asian easily on the broad score from 45 to 20.

In the quarterfinals, France met a direct adversary for the Olympic qualification: Germany. France advanced but on the very tight score 45 to 42.

With, in particular, the last two matches of a very high level. Indeed, Germany were ahead 35 to 27 when Julien Pillet took over the 2nd last relay. Damien Touya took it again to 39/40. But the end of the match was without call [??? - PK] with a victory 45 to 42. The French trembled but they overcame nevertheless. It is felt whereas all the sporting and federal framing breathes!

In the semi-final France was up against Hungary. At the beginning of the match the advantage went to the Hungarians, 10-6 after two matches. But, titular Matthieu Gourdain in the place of Gaël Touya "reverses the vapor" on Ferjancsik to go up to 15-12 for him. Consequently, the French stayed ahead to the end to win a 45-40 important victory in the race at the points for a qualification for the Olympic Games.

An unexpected finals found France versus China.

The Asian team overcame, consecutively, since the table of 16, Poland, the Ukraine and Romania.

Beautiful table of hunting for a still unknown team on the international level. However, the Asian scarecrow will not resist the extremely French trunk.

In this final, the French will take the broad one of entry with a variation which will always vary between 5 and 10 points.

At the end, the victory is obvious (45-35) so much the competitors mastered the stakes of this competition. The experienced (France) against youth (China). But with the OJ [Olympics Games] of Peking, there is no doubt that China will be at it a frightening adversary aguerri with the international tournaments.

In the others matches, it is necessary to note the classification of Romania 4the beaten by Hungary for the 3rd place (45-41). The defeat of Italy by the USA 45-35 for the 5the place and finally that of Germany by the Ukraine [54-43 - PK].

The results interest France which is likely to take again places with the classification of the world cup. In short, an ideal day to take again the practice to gain. Remain to see a match test: France confronted with the uncontested champions of the discipline, Russians absent today.

    Classification:
    1st France
    2nde China
    3e Hungary
    4e Romania
    5e the United States
    6th Italy
    7th Ukraine
    8th Germany
From 9: Spain, Poland, Korea and Thailand.

    Table of 16:
    France B Thaillande 45/20
    1/4 Finales:
    France B Germany 45/42
    1/2 Finales:
    France B Hungary 45/40
    China B Romania 45/41
Finale: Finale France B China 45/35

    The Russians are coming..NOT

How come the Ukrainians were the only one of the former Soviet Union states who competed in this?

Where were the Russians? Did they miss their flight yet again?

I'm sure the result would be diff't had they been there.

Google and Babelfish cannot translate specific idioms correctly. To "reverse the vapor" in French literally means to change the outcome of a situation of make it completely opposite to what it was before.

I think this is taken from old steam powered boat or train drivers that would basically change a lever's position to go into reverse gear, in order to provide for a more powerful brake...

I'm sure the result would be diff't had they been there.

Out of the other Soviet states, which teams besides Russia and Ukraine go to MS world cups with some sort of consistency?

The Russians have won every team event they entered. They basically cannot improve on their ranking no matter how well the other teams perform. And not matter how poorly they would perform if they went to these tournaments, their ranking would not decrease.

So it would basically be throwing money out of the window for them to go to compete to a tournament in which only the team competes (there was no individual world cup on the same week-end). It would also mean that their potential opponents in the Olympics would have one more chance to study them and find some weakness in their game. And Podzniakov is getting old, so he doesn't like travelling that much anymore, I guess.

So they just stay home and practice together. When the Olympics come along, they will be there, and will probably win it.

Out of France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain and Poland, only two of these teams will be going to the Olympics. They are all separated by 74 points, they are all pretty good, and there are only 2 team world cups to go before March 31st, the cutoff date for OG qualification. This should be an interesting end of the season...
