    Triple A rated fencers

Does anyone know anybody who has a A rating in all three weapons? I am sure somebody in the history of the USFA has had one. I am just curious if there are anyone who is currently triple A rated.

Mike D'Asaro Sr., perhaps? There ARE quite a few who are/have been A's in 2 weapons (Derek Snyder from SoCal is one -- epee and foil)

I think that it would be near impossible to have an A in all three weapons.

Even if you could do it, how long could you keep it up? I would imagine its hard enough to hold an A in one weapon.

Who was it here that said certain combinations of weapons was bad. He said foil and Epee is bad because of how different of point weapons they are. But that foil/sabre and epee/sabre were better combinations?

Prior to the rule change in the early 90's (I think it was?), ratings were not lost. Thus, it would not have been as difficult to get a triple A. Now, with the need to defend the A every 4 years, I can see it being quite a bit more difficult.

Depends on the division you compete in. if you get an A and are from a small division like, say, Wyoming (15 people), you're only gonna get an A at a large event like a NAC, and good luck finding tough enough locals to keep your skills up.

SoCal, on the other hand (400+ people), has had quite a few A1 levels in both foil and epee locally, and there are a number of clubs with high rated fencers.

Of course, we COULD have had an A1 in our Div 1 sabre quals if some of the guys from Falcon had stuck around...which they never do. Thanks for helping the division, guys.

Zhon Johansen from Utah has at least an A in epee and foil. I am not sure if he's got one in sabre though...
    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)

Falcon, wasn't that Ralph Faulkner's old school?

And if you've ever fenced her, you feel as if you're ALL target. She's got as much fire as a tiger.

Nope. Ralph's was the Faulkner School of Fencing...or FSF as it's known in SoCal. Falcon is a sabre club run by Boris Sokol.

Sadly, I've never had the pleasure...although a teammate of mine came within 2 of beating her in DE at Duel in the Desert a couple of years back.

However, that WAS the event where I saw her beat the clock with one second against Felicia Zimmerman (who I HAVE met...she lives & works in LA now and I see her at SwordPlay every so often...but not to fence...usually it's to yak with Derek Cotton on the way to work.)

Julie has an A in epee...... that only surprises me because I remember when I lived in Utah she used to swear about how much she hated epee and never wanted to touch one let alone fence it. Oh well..

Zhon's from my club. He does have an "A" in epee and foil, but a lower rating in sabre. I believe he's a "C" in saber, but I'm not sure. I think Stryder has multiple "A"s as well. Lately he and Zhon seem to have quite a rivalry going on. As for Julie, I wouldn't be surprised if she is rated "A" in all weapons. She's very good and I know she has national points in both foil and sabre. I'm jealous BTW, she barely looks to be out of her teens. The first time I saw her in person was at a youth event and I thought she was one of the competitors, not the coach.
