the first rule of war:
Know yourself.
The 2nd rule of war:
Know your enemy.
does that answer your question?
To be less obtuse:
1. Know which one on your team is the strongest.
2. If you know the strength of the individuals of your opposing team, determine if you're going to lose quickly or if you're going to go down the wire. [In most 3-person team events, once you reach 9V it's game over.] So it depends on which team order you've got in the drawing of lots or by seeding you put you strongest fencer to fence the last bout if it's going to be close. Otherwise, it doesn't matter.
One lesson from Sun Tze's The Art of War.
The King challenged the Prince - Sun Tze's employer - to do a 3-horse match [head-to-head] race. The Prince was going to pit his best against the King's best, so on and so forth.
Sun Tse advised the Prince to follow his strategy:
P3 vs K1 [The Prince's worse horse against the King's best horse.]
P1 vs K2
P2 vs K3
Guess you can see the result: The Prince wins 2 out of 3 races...hence the purse. No sense to go best-to-best with the King's when the King can afford better horses...
Another example, not from Sun Tze but from another advisor in battle:
The General lost all his battles and was writing his report to the Emporer.
He wrote:
"Everytime we fight, we keep losing."
The Advisor suggested the following'
"Everytime we lost, we keep fighting."
[In Chinese it's the same 4 words. Believe me it works better in Chinese, but you get the gist.]
I digress...
You get the gist of my tack...
