| Revenge!! Grr.. I was at fencing tonight and we were fencing foil. Everytime I went to corps a corps with this one guy he would slam his bell right into my mask and nearly knock me down. He did this like twice and I told him to watch it. Then he did it again. ARG! I'm not a very violent person mind you, but the next 2 encounters I fleched at him and parried his blade and smacked him up side the head with my bell hard enough that he fell on his butt once. He was fencing with a brand new mask too. The directer knew what was going on and just kinda glared at me.

| hmm granted the other fencer should not do that but when you do that yourself it dosent help matters any and can get you in trouble for being malicus(sp?) so if i were you i would tell the directer whats happening and let him deal with it instead of doign it back if the oponet continues then maybe do it once to show whats happening but that would be a sort of last resort for me

| Revenge is good. Just like in all groups there is always a packing order-- it is the nature thing. Some idiots just need a better dose of their own medecine. If the idiot keeps doing it, try a prime parry and leave your elbow in the way of his mask. That and a few flat flicks should either keep him in line or he'll invite you to step outside....

| You need a new director.

| If he's slamming his guard into your mask to the point where you almost are knocked down, he should have gotten a penalty. Next time, if it's that bad, take a fall instead of catching yourself from falling. It will more likely draw a penalty.
Who was directing??? Why weren't either of you given a red card for corps a corps???

| I am assuming that you two were at your club, just free-fencing without a director. After the second time I would have taken off my mask offered my hand and said thanks for the encounter and never fence him again.
Unfortunately in a competition you don't have that luxury and there are some fencers out there that I would rather sleep with my ex-wife than fence, but you buck up and get through it. You don't have to take that crap at club, though.
Also, talk to your coach about it. Others in the club may be having the same problem. If they are its up to the coach to talk to the other fencer or just plain ask him not to come back.

| Intentionally slamming his guard into your mask? What a jerk! Sounds like he wants to box, not fence!
Lumberg and Mergs have valid points. In the club, if he starts doing it again just stop the bout and explain "I'm sorry, but that's not how I want to fence." and walk away. Eventually, when enough people stop fencing with him he'll realize that he'd better change his style or he'll spend the rest of his nights at the club sitting on the bench wondering "why won't anyone fence me?"
In a tournament any director worth their salt will start flinging cards at the guy if he continues, especially if it's painfully obvious. Definitely talk to your coach about it and if he's doing it to everyone, then take Mergs' advice and ask the coach to step in.
Frankly, resorting to physical violence outside the boundaries of clean fencing is immature and outright foul.

| Yes, listen to Clean Touch. I've actually had a problem with a fencer who had just started fencing at our club. This fencer was continually banging (trust me, it wasn't a beat) my epee to the floor. Just completely annoying. So, I just stopped the bout and walked away and haven't fenced this person since. This fencer got the picture (because other's stopped wanting to fence with this fencer as well), and the fencer has now eased up on the unnecessary aggression/force.
Trust me, people are going to avoid fencers that are complete jerks...I'm sure you're not the only one that feels the same way about this guy. He's alienating himself.
I've found fencers remember other fencers not based entirely on how good of a fencer they are, but if they are nice or jerks.

| Yeah, we were fencing at our club and another fencer was directing. After the bout he came and talked to me. He said he understood and all, but sometimes you should watch when you do that because some directors wouldn't exactly approve of it. He had broken another guy's wrist in a corps a corps accidently when he was just getting back at someone who was going into really hard corps a corps of the guards.

| I remember a guy I used to fence who had only one move - coupe/ hit to the upper arm. It was very easy to pick him off on the hand when he did his nasty coupe. I found out quite early on that simply getting hit didn't stop him - it only made him mad. He would keep going and leave a welt on your arm (why bother with the point when he had already lost the touch)or a swollen bruise. I changed my counter attack to a hit on his hand with a very rapid retreat as far and as fast as I could go. It was wonderful. He got even angrier because he couldn't hurt me.
He was the only person who consistently refused to take off his mask or shake hand after a bout (in club) after I trounced him with those hand touches. At times like that it is always nice, at the end of the bout, to be exceptionally cheerful and come forward (if you feel brave) as if to offer some helpful pointers. Hee hee.
I've always loved sending an overly agressive opponent balistic with realy fine touches and a show of indifference. If you can do it, it is a wonderful feeling.
Of course, I also started wearing a child's soccer shin guard on my upper arm under my jacket. It really helped with that show of indifference when he did clobber me. |

| Teh question that has not been asked here is why you kept going corps a corps with him in the first place?
That is a penalty in foil without the extra bell smacking.

| 'cause he likes doing a fleche flicking attack and I find that it is easier to stop him by just holding your ground.

| Convince the fencer directing to start awarding the corps a corps penalties and retaliation shouldn't be needed....
