Array PK are they like the Alabama of Canada? Sheep-shaggers, sister-shaggers, mother-shaggers, etc.-shaggers... -

Array PKT - nope, he was from Ontario
Black Jeebus - not at all. What they are is the most fun-loving crowd you will find anywhere. Folks from 'The Rock' know how to party, and any excuse will do.

Array BJ,
That's what they want you to believe. Officially.
They're like the Irish to the English, the Poles to the European...ad nauseum. I know, these are all very much non-PC assertations, sterotyping.
Truth be told, some of the funniest Canadians, better singers and fiddlers ARE from the Rock. Hey, they got nothing better to do than to entertain one another.
I think there are more Newfies in the rest of Canada than in Newfoundland.
[BTW, you do NOT say New-FOUND-land. Graham, correct me if I'm wrong, it's NEW-fun-land. Like "Abbotsford" should be pronounced as "AB-bots-[f-u-d]". It's an English thing, OK?]
PK
ps. I had to spell 'f-u-d' with the hyphens because apparently without the hyphens it's a BAD word.
Which reminds me to start a new thread about censorship.

Array PKT,
I was lecturing to a university class with quite a few Newfoundlanders in it and quite quickly had my pronounciation corrected (I am originally from Ontario). I mispronounced Newfoundland twice and then a male voice from the back of the class spoke up: "Newfoundland, Understand' - the two rhyme, with the emphasis on the final syllable, as you suggested.
I spent a couple of summers working in the woods of western Newfoundlan and met a lot of pretty wonderful folk there.
