The easiest and safest way, if you have a vise, is to place the tang in the vise, with the juncture to the blade approximately 1/8" from the vise and bend in and down.

There is no direct rule on how much blade. But what would be legal would depend on the weapon, type of handle and type of guard. How the testing is done is with a Gabarit. The blade must be perpendicular to the Gabarit and the weapon must pass through a cylinder of 15cm long. For Foil it is 12cm, Epee 13.5cm and Sabre a rectangular tube 14x15cm.

It is a testing device for size, angulation, flexibility of the weapon. Basically the mechanics of the weapon. You can see a drawing of one on page 72 of the rule book. It shows everything that the Gabarit tests except for the flexability, which can be done seperately.

Check the USFA web site to see the rule book, if you do not have the latest.
