#1 | | Guest | How often do you fence? Just wondering! I have group lessons, then go to the club to practice one or two days after, then have a private lesson over the weekend. Oh also, if your an advance fencer, or have been fencing for awhile, how often did you fence when you were just starting? Thanks!

| I'm still pretty much a beginner... been at it for a year and a quarter now.
My job takes me out of town a lot... like right now... Times like these, I fence once a week on Sundays. If I'm not on the road, three times a week.
What I need to do is find a Fencing club whereever my company sends me. I'm in Eden Prairie, Minnesota until April... anyone on the board know of one near me? |

| I fence twice a week, about 4 hours each time. I take 1 private lesson per week.
When I started to fence (that was about 11 years ago) I went there twice a week. The most often I have been fencing was, well every workday, but I did not get any lessons until very recently, so there's a lot to catch up on!
Also, I have read somewhere that if you want to sustain your level in any type of activity (sport, and fencing included), you have to practice at least twice a week. Once a week and you might loose some of your fencing game. Twice a week and you'll keep it at the same level. 3 times a week and in no time you'll be one of those lucky super level fencers :-).

| I'm definitely a beginner- I've only been fencing for 6 months. On the school team, I fence 5 days a week, 2 hours a day (a typical week with no meets). Depending on our schedule during the season, we have 1 to 3 meets a week, with some Saturday meets- all leading up to the state finals at the beginning of March. We go for the usual winter sports season. Around September, continuing education with 1 hour a week starts up. I'll do that to get a boost on the season, and I'm currently doing that to extend the season. During the summer, I plan on joining a local club and going up there as much as possible. I might also do the 1-week camp at Brandeis University.

| I've also been fencing for about 6 months. Unfortunatly, our school doesn't have a team...yet...I'll be starting one this month. But currently, I fence 3-4 times a week, depending on level of homework and soccer conflicts. I get two private lessons a week, I help coach the begginers on one of those days also. I try to come in saturdays and mondays, just to bout with the people who are waaay up there in the rankings (we have a number one guy, and around 3 top-twenties at our club), which I like because it is good practice even though my butt gets kicked every time.

| When i was a begginer, i used to fence 3 hours a week, plus a private lesson of half an hour.
I've been fencing for almost 9 years and now, i fence from monday to saturday, 5 hours daily, plus a private lesson of 1 hour, that would be like 31 hours or something.
But i have not enough fencing, I WANT MORE!!!!!

| Ok, I had to think about this.... on a typical week (ie no competitions, of any sort) I'll do Monday night bout training (absolute murder but its good for me), Tuesday is either an off night or I travel to the southside of town for about 1.5 hours fencing (it depends on my recovery rate from Monday), Wednesday I fence for about 2.5 hours with a 15 minute lesson, Thursdays is bouts at the other Northside club, Fridays is my designated "no fence" day, Saturdays is 9:30am till whenever (generally about 12:30, 1ish) fencing with another 15 - 20 mintue lesson (depending where in the order I am) and I also give the occassional lesson or take the musketeers group. Sundays is comp days (generally 1 a month). I have been fencing 2.5 years. When I started the only things missing were Wednesday and Saturday.

| Gee, whiz. I guess I'm the slacker in this group.
I fence on Sunday afternoons for about two hours when family obligations permit.
Of course, I never claimed to be very good at fencing... |

| Currently, I fence 3 days a week, 2 hours a day. But I'll be throwing in an extra day or maybe even two, starting next week at another club! Can't ever have enough fencing! I think an additionally 2 to 4 hours to my already 6 hours per week will be a very good idea.
When I first began fencing back in '94, I was fencing 3 days per week, 3 hours per day.

| Hmm, my fencing habits have changed over the years.
When I had finally convinced my parents that I wanted to fence (they were both saber fencers) and did not (repeat: did not) want to take either ballet or gymnastics or any other leotarded sport (my mother once made the comment that I looked like a pregnant worm in a leotard) then I took the one hour class for beginners at my club twice a week. That went on for years until my boy-friend, now my husband, suggest I actually compete. I got the bug, then.
When I was really into it and really competing, going to all circuits etc., I fenced and did conditioning and footwork with a group three times a week, the whole workout lasting about 3 and 1/2 hours. Twice a week (on the other days) I did foot work on my own for about 1/2 hour, took a lesson, went to a nearby stadium and ran a few miles and did the stairs. I also went to a gym for weights about three times a week and tried to swim at least twice a week (it really stretched out my sore back and legs!) for about 45 min.
Once a week I tried to do a one hour run through the park - also mostly relaxing. Before important competitions, I cut back on the extra training and skipped bouting.
This kind of activity does take a toll on the body. During that training I remember times when my back hurt so much I had to roll (or be rolled) out of the bed, land on the floor on my hands a knees, and work myself up to standing by climbing my hands up my legs. My hip usually hurt so I couldn't sleep on one side. I tore both my ACLs and broke my ankle. Not everyone is going to suffer like this, mind you, but every locker in the women's locker room held a giant bottle of ibuprofen - and they never went beyond their expiration date!
Older and wiser and not so fond of pain any more, I fence for fun. A couple of hours of bouting, a few lessons, enough footwork to keep me moving. I still run, do conditioning weights, and swim. It's enough. |

I should be starting back next week with once a week for two hours of fencing.

| Currently I fence twice a week for two hours each, and once a week for four hours (an hour of which is now theatrical fencing). I get approximately one-two private lessons a week.
If I had the spare time I'd definately fence more! (I could certainly use the practice ).
Cheers,
Dragoneye.

#16 | | Guest | How do you guys have the time?! I wish I could fence that much! My group lesson is an hour and my private lasts about how ever long I can! LoL About 45 min usually. The club I fence out is about a 15 min drive, so my parents don't always want to take me out there are and watch, because what's the point of coming home? Ahh sorry for rambling! | |

I hear you, Barry. Family needs come first, but I WANNA FENCE! WAAAAAAHHH!!!
