Array Dogs make Better Pets than Cats Dogs make Better Pets than Cats
Dogs are playful, loyal (well more like subserviant and unconditional affection) entertaining and love you no matter how ugly you are.
Cats are cunning, arrogant, stubborn and unengaging.
If you are a Cat fan, what do you say in defence of the puddy cat? Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat.

Array You don't have to let cats outside when they need to do their business. Also, cats can be described as "fluffy", where as "fuzzy" (or "shaggy", depending on the breed of mutt), and while there may not appear to be a difference there, it comes down the the texture of the fur.
Of course, everything you've said about dogs depends on the dog...I've seen some downright mean and spiteful dogs in my day. If this post did not contain any sarcasm, it very well should have. -

Array Cunning, arrogant, and stubborn...sounds like me. Perhaps that's why I like cats better. Such qualities make life more interesting.
I disagree with the unengaging part. I think cats are hilarious and intelligent, while still being quite cuddly companions. There are also nice cats in existence, but unlike a dog, you have to earn their love, so it means more. - Bug

Array That's interesting Bug that you say most fencers are Cat people.
Cat people in that Cats are the preferred pet, or in that the Cat person resembles in personality the traits of a Cat? Thou shouldst eat to live; not live to eat.

Valid point: Cats are more self-sufficient(not needing to go outside to go) Dogs can suffer when forgotten by the owners.
Most cats have nicer coats than Dogs, being also superior in the cleanliness factor.
But what a waste of day painstakingly licking oneself from whisker to paw?

Array I agree with Socrates (nice sign on by the way) on the running around dirty bit. However I also agree with bug on earning a cats respect, love, etc. Yes, they are very entertaining as well. And you have to keep them in little cages which seems a bit mean, unless you have loads of wedge and can afford an aviary.
If I didn't live in a first-floor (i.e. upstairs) flat, and worked more regular hours, and didn't live in London, I would like to have a dog to take on walks over the hills, to throw sticks for, to pet in front of the fire...*sigh* Louweasel

Truly, you have to go on a case-by-case basis still. Our last dog was a very sweet, quiet mutt, but not very affectionate. Dad was her favorite for sure, and anybody else she didn't care that much about. Still very sad to see her go due to a type of blood cancer (quick, though, only a few days from perfectly healthy to dead, if you'd believe it).
Our current dog is about six months old, an all black german sheperd. He's got loads of personality, and is the closest thing I've ever had to a younger brother - had great fun with him while home over break. Very vocal, very playful, tons of energy - also very affectionate, and clearly glad to see you when you get up in the morning. He's my loyal (and entertaining) sidekick.
Cats: I've seen plenty of the detached, unpleasant variety - they're normally the outdoor cats. Don't much care for them. We've got two cats. One is an obnoxious orange thing, skittish, mouthy as hell, antisocial, and, I believe (seriously) psychotic - completely aside from their usual playfighting, he will sometimes just go insane for no reason and attack the other, actually trying to kill him. Really can't stand that cat, especially in the afternoons when he thinks it's time to get fed.
The other is a larger black and white one, definitely my cat (for the black alone, if nothing else). Much more personality - were he human, I'd picture him on a couch, feet up on the coffee table, wearing a bathrobe and smoking a cigar while reading the morning paper. Very laid back. However, also very affectionate - sit on one of the stools at the breakfast bar (his favorite place) and snap your fingers, he'll come running for the attention. He'll also sulk, too - they know when they're doing something wrong like being on the table and/or eating flowers; punish him for it, and he'll sulk for the rest of the day. I really can't make a judgement here - I think I like Maverick (our current dog, aptly named, especially considering Greek mavre is black), as well as my cat - and the two seem to get along with each other pretty well besides.
But llamas are still way cooler than anything else - loyalty, intelligence, affection, intelligence, usefulness, anything else you want. -

Array I love all animals. I have had cats, dogs, fish, frogs, and birds. Currently I have 2 dachschunds that are bros and both 12. And a 7 month old yellow labrador puppy. When my mom had a cat I remember fearing it more than death. That cat hated me. It would sneak into my room like a ninja, and kill my goldfish. Then chase me down! But Im sure it was just jealous becuase I was a toddler and my mom probly payed more attention to me. Also I have some kind of special connection with animals. Its almost like a telepathy. When im on walks stray dogs follow me home. And I find their owner for them. And sometimes stray cats come to my house and I feed them and let them stay in my garage. And wounded birds fly down into my backyard and I nurse them back to health then let them go. Its kind of like a gift I have. I fear not death, for the sooner I die the longer I shall be immortal. -

Array We have three cats, and they are affectionate and sweet. They follow us around the house. The youngest one likes to play fetch with a toy we throw for her, and she walks around the house with it in her mouth. Sometimes when we go to bed and shut the bedroom door, she shoves it underneath the door and waves her paws at it in order to make us come out again.
When my husband sits to watch TV, two of them lie either side of him and the third sits on his lap. When he gets up and goes upstairs, they follow him, one sitting on his couch, one on the rug, one lying on the landing outside his study. They like to stare into our eyes and be petted, and they rub their heads against us. They lie on their backs and let us rub their bellies. They lick us when we're scratching their backs. They "talk" to us, and come when they're called. All our cats have been that way. I think they're all a little regressed into kittenhood because of the way we raise them, so we (my husband, my daughter, and I) are their "moms."
I was raised with dogs, and I like them fine, but cats have been great pets for us and I wouldn't trade them for anything. Well, we did get the youngest one the day after we dropped our daughter off for her freshman year in college, so I guess you could say we traded a child for a cat.
Of course, I'm allergic to cats, wouldn't you know, so they're not allowed in the bedroom and I have a HEPA air filter there.

I disagree, my cat grins like the Cheshire cat when he is happy. The other thing I like about cats over dogs is the fact that if you have an outdoor cat, the chances of it aimlessly wandering into traffic are far slimmer than if a loose dog does the same. It's not easy making this look easy. -
