Array The latest Fencers Quarterly When I checked my mail yesterday, I had my latest copy of Fencers Quarterly. I just loved the cover. It had two extremely contorted fencers trying to infight. The caption said something like, "Evolution or Degeneration? You decide." I really think that is taking fencing out of contex and making it look like all fencing is as ugly as that.... unreal. Any comments? ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

Array What I believe What I think they are trying to say is that fencing has become a little out of control as of late. If the fencers on the cover had been able to control distance they would not have had to be so contorted to infight. "You seem like a decent fellow I hate to kill you"

Array FQ is just a platform for Evangelista to vent his spleen about anything in fencing after 1954. He's only a crank. (And, in the Good Old Days, nobody ever did infighting? Not even in a duel? Baloney!) "In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are different." -

Array Sure, better distance could fix the problem. However, the thing I see is that Nick is using that photo to justify his position on fencing. The magazine does have its good points, but that cover gets me evertime I look at it. ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

Array Perhaps we should apply his own medicine to him.
At the homepage of http://www.fencersquarterly.com/ look at the pictures... You call that a lunge? (bottom left and right) You let somebody fence wearing shorts? Callous disregard for safety!
At his personal website http://users.townsqr.com/ale/index.htm there's plenty of poor form as well: leaning and bent back leg in the lunge. For shame!
All this is silly - depending on when the shutter clicks you may or may not get a pretty picture, but he shouldn't throw bricks when his house is made of glass. "In theory, theory and practice are the same, but in practice, theory and practice are different." -

You, of all people, should know that mentioning FQ (wow I didn't know that was still out there) is only inviting another round of Evangalista bashing...
Although I do have say, I think he's used that exact phrase in previous articles. I wonder if he just reprints old articles, after all how many different different ways can you say 'Modern fencing sucks'?
I think I've hit the limit on different ways that I can say 'Evangalista sucks'. -

Array Too true Achilleus. However, I found the photo, its context, and the caption too silly to pass over. ... without remorse for the past, confident in the present, and full of hope for the future, [d'artagnan] went to bed and slept the sleep of the brave.

I read his book The Art and Science of Fencing and boy is that a book of opinions...and I wonder how that kid broke his leg! probably listening to nick (bottom left same as the shorts picture) "The shopowner and his son ... well that's an entirely different story altogether ... I had to beat them to death with their own shoes." Similar Threads -
