Array All clear electric diamond masks for sabre and epee. From my yr 12 chemistry classes I know that diamond, a carbon crystal conducts electricty. This gives it the potential when manufactured artificially to make a clear, conductive, very hard face mask for epee and sabre! Now we just need to attract the likes of Athena Onasis to the sport. firebrand -

You don't need a conductive mask in Epee - in fact if it conducted you probably would not get the hit.
Leon Paul already make an FIE approved sabre mask with a clear panel. This panel is not conductive and so effectively reduces the target in Sabre. Which seems a bit unfair, but really who cares about sabre?
How heavy would your carbon crystal be? Would it be resistant to the kind of shock it is likely to undergo? I caught this morning morning’s minion, king-
dom of daylight’s dauphin, dapple-dawn-drawn Falcon, in his riding
Of the rolling level underneath him steady air, and striding
High there, how he rung upon the rein of a wimpling wing
In his ecstasy! then off, off forth on swing,
As a skate’s heel sweeps smooth on a bow-bend: the hurl and gliding
Rebuffed the big wind. My heart in hiding
Stirred for a bird,—the achieve of; the mastery of the thing! -

Array It is somewhat a farsical invention. Diamond is the hardest known substance. But why don't you like sabre? What's so good about epee? I haven't tried epee yet. firebrand -

Array Oh good, an affordable alternative! I'm sure the huge diamonds will be much more affordable than the current windows on the new masks, particularly with the peculiar cut they'd need. -

Array diamond is the strongest substance currently but that would bump the costs for sabre masks thru the roof. last time i checked diamonds not cheaper than plastic.

Array I think artificial diamond is called cubic zirconium, any way it is cheaper than the mined stuff. Smaller crystal size perhaps. I wouldn't make stuff like that really.

Array But diamond is much heavier then most the plastic and metal that goes into making a mask. It seems a bit uncomfortable, to have your face always hanging down abit as your mask struggles with gravity. "Steady as a mountain, attack like fire, still as a wood, swift as the wind. In heaven and earth I alone am to be revered." -

firebrand Two different things.
Artificial (or rather synthetic) diamond is the same as natural diamond (carbon). It is, however, created quickly through a manufacturing process, rather than over millions of years.

-Tre' Diamond is not the strongest substance but rather the hardest substance. It actually cleaves rather easily in the correct plane (that's how they cut them).
What one needs in a "window" is a balance between transparency, hardness, strength and, very importantly, toughness.
The current crop of plastics are pretty good in this regard but could use improvement in hardness (for scratch resistance).

Exactly. Not only that, but they can even shatter completely if dropped at the right angle. It's not easy making this look easy. -

Paolo Faster cooling means smaller crystal size I think. Also watches theses days are sometimes made with glass faces coated in saphire. A diamond layered hardened glass face perhaps backed with plastic would be good. Hardened glass is so tough! NASA uses it and Arcoroc from France. You wouldn't need much. So lightness is proportional. Soon we may have a conductive clear plastic anyway.
What about a ceramic or carbon fibre plastrons or jackets, seriously. This stuff is used in mine proof shoes. It would be light, safe, cool and fairly inexpensive. firebrand -

Array that sounds like a really cool idea firebrand.
