Eric, I beg to differ on some points:

    Here are my pronostics

    1) Penn State
    2) St Johns
    3) Stanford
    4) Notre Dame
    5) Columbia
    6) Princeton
    7) Ohio
    8) Univ of Pennsylvania

    Women's Foil:
    Iris Zimmermann (first)
    Erinn Smart
    Ute Breden
    Katie Cavan

    Women's Epee:
    Arlene Stevens (first)
    Emese Takacs
    Stephanie Eim
    Kate Rudkin

    Women's Sabre:
    Sada Jacobson (first)
    Caroline Purcell
    Marisa Mustilli
    Christina Verigan

    Men's Foil:
    Felix Reichling (first)
    Florian Reichling
    Jonathan Tiomkin
    Ozren Debic

    Men's Epee:
    Wiercoch (first)
    Landgren
    Viviani
    Soren Thompson

    Men's Sabre:
    Keeth Smart (first)
    Ivan Lee
    Colin Parker
    Jakub Krochmalski

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Ithink veeco has it pretty close except that Princeton will finsh 4th, with Notre Dame 6th overall. No way Notre Dame will Finish ahead of Penn State. Iris 1st in womens foil. I think Ivan Lee, if he's on, could suprise Keeth Smart. I'll know first hand by Sunday as I'm a timer for the Womens events on Sat and Sun.

Day 1's results are in: http://www.ncaachampionships.com/new...309688832.html

St John's ahead in a big way, powered by the sabre and foil results. I'm surprised Joe Fisher is way up there. Keeth and Ivan are one and two in the sabre, with Keeth being the only fencer (in all three weapons, so far) undefeated.

Florian Reichling is not doing as well as I expected. Maybe freshmen nerves, though I think the competition is just pretty good: John Tiomkin, Jed Dupree are German flick-meister killers (although I have no evidence that Columbia or St Johns have competed against Stanford already).

Notre Dame is second by 12 victories; Penn State is third at 48 and Stanford fourth at 43. Tomorrow will conclude the men's portion and then the weekend will have the women's portion. The women's event will shake up St Johns and Notre Dame as their women's squad is not as strong.

And Kees Van der Wege is waaaay down there.

St John's have pulled out to an 106 victories to the next (Notre Dame) at 92. St John's real weakness is in women's foil. Even if they go five victories apiece for a total of 10, their women's epee can bring in 35 and women's sabre at least 30, giving them 181 victories. Very tough for Notre Dame to close up, with 6 unknowns in their women's squad.

Penn State has Charlotte Walker in their women's foil, the other, Marta Grochal is an unknown factor. Expect 25 victories for both combined. PSU also has Stephanie Eim as their lone epee fencer. Stephanie might be able to win 20 bouts. PSU has two women sabre fencers, but both are new, and I'm guessing 20 victories combined, giving them 65 victories on a good day. That gives them 140+ victories combined, which will be quite a bit away from St John's.

I have to revise Stanford's chances, now that their men's team didn't do as well. Stanford has two solid women foilists, so expect them to get 40 victories. The epee is always a toss up, so I'll say 30 victories for Simpson and Lisagor, combined. Everett is a pretty solid, if not highly charged, sabre fencer, and Boudalis have last year's NCAAs under her belt. I'd give Everett 16 bouts and Boudalis 9 for 25 from the sabre squad. That's only 95 victories. Combining that will put Stanfoo in good place for second, but unlikely for third.

The only chance for an upset of St John's is in women's epee. If Takacs and Stevens both do badly, say, losing half their bouts, then Notre Dame or Stanford could come in. Eim's singular performance in women's epee won't be enough of a factor to help PSU.

Like I said Ivan Lee over Keeth Smart in mens sabre. But,I eat my words about Notre Dame not finishing above Penn State. WOW St. John's!! I never saw it coming...

Well, lessee...Stanfoo dropped like da bomb. Just like their b-ball brethren. St John's did really well. Penn State did better than I thought they would.

Emese Takacs won, as I predicted. And Arlene was second as I called it. I completed forgot about Eim when I made my prediction.

No surprises in women's foil as Iris came in as the only undefeated fencer in the whole NCAA. Ute Breden did better than I thought, which was good. Erinn Smart didn't compete...don't know why. Elizabeth Thottam took 10th with 12 victories. Good for her. I didn't think she'd do as well.

Sada Jacobson won, beating out Mustilli. Could have gone either way with Mustilli and Purcell, so my predictions came pretty close. Sakinah did really well. Didn't know enough about her.

If PSU had two women epeeists, they would have won #7. If you look at the team results, PSU posted solid 30's in three events. If they had 2 women epeeists, they would have posted four. There's no weak link in that team. St John's powered by with their superb men's sabre. Although their women epeeists took first second, their important numbers were not too impressive.

My top four teams were the top four teams. I also got three of the next four in there. So, everyone, pay up. Send checks to...

OK, now that I have some time, let's see how many points I have.

    1) Penn State
    2) St Johns
    3) Stanford
    4) Notre Dame
    5) Columbia
    6) Princeton
    7) Ohio
    8) Univ of Pennsylvania

That's 30pts. Yes Eric, the French guy got all the top 8 schools! Well, they are not in order, but I'm pretty proud of myself :-). I knew Ohio would be in the top 8, because they've been improving a lot lately. They could be one of the big guns next year, esp. with Kolobkov coming on board as a coach.

    Women's Foil:
    Iris Zimmermann (first)
    Erinn Smart
    Ute Breden
    Katie Cavan

    Another 25pts for me.

    Women's Epee:
    Arlene Stevens (first)
    Emese Takacs
    Stephanie Eim
    Kate Rudkin

OK, maybe I was too crazy to think that Stevens would win, but I think she had the potential. She loses only 15-13, so that wasn't that bad. Again, I have all 4 finalists in disorder. 40 points.

    Women's Sabre:
    Sada Jacobson (first)
    Caroline Purcell
    Marisa Mustilli
    Christina Verigan

35 points, and I don't even know anything about sabre :-).

    Men's Foil:
    Felix Reichling (first)
    Florian Reichling
    Jonathan Tiomkin
    Ozren Debic

Just 10 points here. I really don't know crap about foil :-).

    Men's Epee:
    Wiercoch (first)
    Landgren
    Viviani
    Soren Thompson

Landgren finishes 5th, so not a real miss on my part, but I have Wiercioch in my list. That's 30 more points

    Men's Sabre:
    Keeth Smart (first)
    Ivan Lee
    Colin Parker
    Jakub Krochmalski

    30 points.

Overall, that gives me 195 points. Can you beat that??? :-)

Hey wait a sec... How come you get 45 points for WE and WS??? :-) I won't let this go by like this :-).

Lessee, I have 35 points for WS, and I have the same pronostic as you. So there's a problem here. From the rules you instituted, you get 15 points for guessing the first one, and 10 points for each fencer in the top 4 that was in the top 4.

So in the case of Women's sabre, we both get 35. Now as far as women's epee, is concerned, no mention of Stephanie Eim in your post. So that's 35 points as well.

Anyway, I'm still 10 points short. I'm beaten :-). Congrats!

Read the original post. It's stated there that you get 15 EXTRA points (not just 15 points) for calling the individuals winners.

    I'm not chadding folks here.

Too bad only three people listed their choices. I think my chances would have been better otherwise.
