    tactics on foil?

does anyone know of any books that I could read to help with my foil tactics and game plans, etc. I read The art and science of fencing by nick evangilista and I liked all of the stuff on foil fencing but I skipped through all the other uneccessary garbage. I didn't need to get eplained what a lunge is thanks for any help
"The shopowner and his son ... well that's an entirely different story altogether ... I had to beat them to death with their own shoes."

    Some good reads for tactics:

The Big Book of Fencing - Explains the tactical considerations behind a lot of the moves.

Foil Fencing: Advanced Competitive Training: Very good, but dense read. I'm out of stock, but you can order from www.swordplaybooks.com

Fencing and the Master: This is the book every coach should have! It includes lots of drills for lessons for different skills development. (Available at http://www.fencing101.com/catalog/ )

Also, I just received the Tyshler Training videos in DVD format. There are 2 for foil. Foil 1 is mainly Technique. Foil 2 is more advanced tactics. You can view the details/contents at: http://www.fencing101.com/catalog/

    Hope that helps,
    Craig

I find the best way to learn foil tactics is to watch what the best do. It also just comes with experience.

Good coaching is really important in adding to your stash of good tactics you can pull out in a bout.

I know what you mean, so many of the books you find on fencing are simply the basic moves described without any tactics or thought behind them, just simply "A lunge is the method for delivering your attack".

I hate evangislista books. A little to much idealism for me, and I disagree with many of his tactics (for instance an en guarde with the blade centered, rather than in six, its only inviting feints to the outside followed by a one two landing in six. With an guard in six, or even four, you can ignore half the feints given and therefore keep your cool)

A book that I am thougroughly enjoying is Electric foil fencing, advanced competitve training by Istvan lukovich, (I'm not sure if this is the one refered to by craig). its a great book, a little bit dated though, i.e. parry prime, riposte to back (no flick) with hand in septime.... but with the new rule changes maybe those hits will come back into fashion

Also it has a nice forward concerning the changes that the electric box had on fencing, which is an interesting read.

A great book for tactics also.

I'm told that another good book is Fencing with the electric foil (what creative titles ) but I have yet to read it.

and finally a good way to get your mind into fencing is to read the rule book every once in a while, sure it might turn you into a strip lawyer, but its still a good idea to know the rules well.

    Hope that helps
