Fencing in 2003 has been GOOD (and BAD) because ...

    2003 has been GREAT because...
I had a lot of fun fencing in different places.
I did not reinjured my twice operated knee.
I beat 6 A's in poules this year despite being unranked.

    2003 was BAD because ...
I injured my back, reinjured my left ankle several times and my right elbow and wrist.
My coach got diagnosed with lung cancer.

    2003 was great because
    1. I got a top 8 finish
    2. I improved my ranking
    3. I had fun

    2003 was bad becuase
    1. My coach in Brisbane is being transferred to Sydney
    2. Tassie has very little fencing
    3. You can only go so far on lessons alone!
Theses are evil....VERY evil, someone rescue me pls!

    Thanks, David.
The real issue is that in a 5 point Epee poule bout, I like many C's can surprise people because I study good fencers and I am unorthodox in my style. Good fencers pick up the lack of athleticism and mobility (partly due to injuries) and will usually beat me in 15 point bouts.

Because I have no new chronic injuries.

Because I'm in better shape than I have been for years.

Because I did as well as I set out to in the first NAC of the year, even if I am disgusted because I know I could have done better--funny thing about that.

Because we are one step closer to having WS in the World Veterans. According to the announcement at the Veterans Committee meeting, the petitions of the countries were filed after the affirmative vote in Limoges, and it's officially in "the next World Championships." At this point no one is quite sure whether that means 2004 or 2005. Paul Levy of the Veterans Committee deserves tremendous credit for politicking the vote in Limoges and following through via e-mail to make sure the countries petitioned.

    The Good....

Good finishes in national comps, a few medals. Nice comeback after an injury.

    The Bad....

    Very long slump

    The Ugly...

ACL and miniscal tears, followed by recontstuctive surgery and 6 months of no fencing.

A Close call with some tendons/veins on my off hand

    The Good:

Moving back to France and train with a great bunch of people and coaches.
Discovering all the things that need to be fixed in my fencing and getting rid of a good bunch of my problems.
Learning that I can win and can be good at this thing.
    F. Jeannet Finally world champion.
Soren Thompson making top 8 at worlds.

    The Bad:

Moving back to France and leaving a great bunch of people and coaches.
Getting sick and beat up a tad too much and missing a couple of practices.
Kolobkov not fencing in individual world champs.
French ME team losing to Austria in world champs.

    • Epee is the Louis Vuitton bag of fencing: only the best can get it, and the rest of the masses must content themselves with cheap knockoffs (sabre, foil)
    • To not recognize the power of the French grip is to be in denial

Congrats, Craig! Cherish every minute; they grow up quickly and stop listening to you. I have a 14yo girl and 12 yo son. I hope he has better taste than dad selecting a good University. Maybe we can rekindle the UNC vs Duke thread now that your team has a decent coach.

    Good:
Some stuff was finally beginning to sink in
It looked like I was going to be able to do more competitions.

    Bad:
    1. Internal strife at the club
    2. Being out of a building, consequently,
    3. not being able to fence since the end of June. (At first a break was nice, but now I miss fencing, and my buddies so much I could cry, seriously)
    4. If we don't start our club again, the closest fencing is an hour away, on the freeway (and while many on this board drive farther, at this point in my life I can't afford the time, plus I'm scared to death of the freeeway)

    Good:
    My result in Palm Springs
UMass's results throughout the year, especially at Club Nationals
Started with a new coach (in epee!)

    Bad:
That it took until PS for me to earn points? Didn't re-earn a rating during a calendar year for the first time ever? Don't really have a bad here, fencing-wise the year was pretty much all up.

He came in 21st, if I remember correctly.
Lost in the round of 32 to Marten Zagunis, whom he beat in the first round of pools.

For more specifics you'd have to ask him (tho I guess you already did)
From what I remember it was all very impressive.

As mentioned by whtouche I placed 21st. He's a little off on how I got there. I lost to Jason Rogers in the 32, beat Mike Golia in repechage and lost to Marten Zagunis in the 24 repechage. Given that it was my first top-32 result (and obviously therefore my first top-24 result as well) I was VERY pleased.
