Mask fit - for an oval face I just bought one of the Uhlmann FIE masks on sale at the fencing post. First I got a medium but it wouldn't clear my chin on the bottom. If I really squeezed it from the sides it would go below my chin but I was worried about bending the brand new mask.
I exchanged it for a large and that will clear my chin, just barely with some pressure from the sides. So it's comfortable but with generous room around the sides. I know these things aren't supposed to fit like a ski boot but it's expensive enough that I don't want to get the wrong one. Can anyone lend some advice ? I measured 59cm around my face which by Uhlmann's chart is a medium. I had the same issue with the Negrini mask I tried on in another store. I thought I saw someone mention that Leon Paul's mask were perhaps more suited to a narrower face.
Thanks again for everyone's help on the board.

Array Ben,
you propose an intersting question. Do you bend new masks?
I was taught to bend a mask when you get it, even if its new. You bend the tongue so it fits, and you can make it narrower if need be. I fit Uhlmann's small FIE mask, and its the tightest fit I've ever had. I still needed to bend it a bit when I bought it.
If you are in a large Uhlmann, and its really that much too wide, you might want to see if you can bend over and have it fall off. Thats my usual indicator it is indeed FAR too large. That, and the fact that you can turn it 90 degrees. You want a good fit, you really do.
As to LP's masks, I remember the few I fenced with being very wide, but this may be because I've got a small head!
I hope you have luck finding something that works! -

Array When I've gotten masks at American Fencing Supply the people there have had no qualms about bending the mask a bit to come up with the proper fit. -
Triplette masks seem to me to be made narrower. You may need a XL though.
And yes bending is essential, tongue, sides... Similar Threads -
