    Flu Problem and JO's

Just curious if anyone knew if the USFA was going to give special consideration to kids who could have fenced in JO's in the surrounding weeks to this post but could not due to the flu epidemic going around some parts of the country.

I hope we can all agree that these kids trying to fence anyway is a bad idea on lots of levels and alows them to qualify by appeal.

I was just wondering if anyone had approached this with the national office yet to see if they might be willing to let these kids qualify by appeal.

    Thanks for your help.

Generally, you can petition the USFA to allow you to qualify for a tournament if there was a good reason for your absence at the qualifiers.
It's not easy making this look easy.

    Qualifying by appeal

    (USFA Operation Manual Page 36
    2000 Edition Revision 2000.09)

All appeals must be made in writing to:

    Director of Technical Programs
    USFA National Office
    One Olympic Plaza
    Colorado Springs, CO 80909-5774

and must be received within three business days following the competition from which the petitioner could have qualified, and in no case later than the entry deadline for the championship.

The appeal must be accompanied by:

    (1) A non-refundable filing fee of $25.00 made payable to the USFA.

    (2) A statement of specific details as to the dates, reason for absence, and other pertinent facts. Any medical reasons must be substantiated by written confirmation from a physician.

    (3) A summary of the fencer’s significant competitive results during the past year. Results in previous National Championships (JO Championships, where applicable) and recent North American Cup competitions should especially be noted.

    (4) A self-addressed, stamped envelope for reply to the appeal.
An appeal is not a substitute for a timely entry. Petitioner must file an entry by the entry deadline. If the appeal is denied, all tournament fees specific to the competition(s) denied will be refunded.
