And I would like to know why did you start fencing??
Good question. I wish I had a good answer. I've always been interested in swords, martial arts, etc., but I never had the slightest inclination to actually try fencing. I guess I wasn't really exposed to it. What actually got me to start fencing was being EXTREMELY bored one day. I was so bored I decided that I had to do something new. Two things came to mind, fencing and sailing. Well, I still really want to learn to sail; I just have the time with all the fencing I do.

Actually, I was in high school, and I went up to my mother and said, "I want to learn to sword fight."

She gave me a perplexed look and asked, "Do you mean fencing?"

I probably would have been up for whatever (seeing how I was bored). Also, I must confess that a bout of playing with a machete in the backyard kind of influenced the whole "I'm bored/ wanna learn to sword fight train of thought".

    Rolls.

Mine is not that interseting either.

Freshman year of high school I joined the marching band, one of the rehersals was at 6:30 on Thursday nights. But because I live 30 minutes from my school I could not get picked up so I would stay at school from 2:15(end of school) until the end of practice(9:30). But the time in between school and practice I had nothing to do. THe drum major (captain) of the band was also the captain of the fneicng team. The team happened to practice from 3-5 On Thursdays. I watched a few practices because of the drum major and realized how cool it was. Asked if I could do it and my parents thought it was great because it is not as time consuming as other high school sports but still a great way to get some physical activity. Little did they know it would become my obsession in life and eventually become MORE time consuming than other sports. But that is another issue.

By the way welcome to the board and good luck with your fencing.
    -Kevin

It was my second year of collage when I started. We were all hanging out, watching tv when one of my friends said she had heard that the fencing club (wow there is such a thing) was having it's interest meeting. She said she was going to go check it out. I thought it sounded cool, and since I was looking for a new sport to try out, I went along. I feel in love with the sport and the people on the spot.

    Hiya and welcome

I started fencing because I've always wanted to try it out, and a friend was going to try to put a local club together.

    I've loved fencing ever since.

YAAAAAY SAILING!!! if you ever do get the chance to learn how to sail, do it! sailing is the coolest thing i have ever done. i especially like racing, but leisure sailing is just as good. I would say to sail a catamaran if you get the opportunity because i like them better than monohulls(partly because im not good at racing monohulls), but learning how to sail a monohull like a laser or a sunfish is easiest.

Freshman year of high school I joined the marching band, one of the rehersals was at 6:30 on Thursday nights.
Go marching band geeks!!! i also found my fencing club through somebody i knew in marching band. craziness.

I just joined too - and actually - I don't fence. My question is why would I join fencing? I've heard about it, but don't know much. What is your favourite thing about fencing?

Hey albatross. I am new to this site to and havent started fencing yet. But my reason for it is that I have taken alot of martial arts and combat related sports before, but fencing is a family tradition. Fencing seems really cool and its an olympic sport Also the people here are really nice.

    Welcome! I'm also new here!

I started fencing when I was in high school. Two of the guys I knew started taking lessons (one of them being my boyfriend at the time) and my best friend went along to watch. She wasn't allowed to just watch - they taught her footwork! She dragged me along next week, they taught me footwork - instant addiction!

Well in my first year of secondary school,I joined the military band but quit after 1 lesson (it was really horrible). Then,I had nothing to do for two months and since my friends were in the fencing club,I decided to give it a shot.At first,I got bored but I quickly fell in love with the sport. Can't imagine how things would be like if I had'nt quit the band and joined the fencing club instead...

I was always fascinated with swords and knights and such, and fencing was as close as I could get at the time. Plus it was unusual, so I wanted to check it out.

That was 30 years ago, and I've never looked back.

I had always wanted to learn, but the Uni club never had lessons at the right time. My b/f then broke up with me and to cheer me up my Dad paid for a 10 week beginner course in town. That was over 5 years ago and I havent looked back!

I'm new as well. Always been into martial arts and I loved the Three Musketeers (the one with John Boy from the Waltons, Richard Thomas I think). Started in high school, got out of it for a while then kinda flirted with it. Just started getting serious(?) about it within the past year and a half. Like the epee, but I'm a classicalist at heart. Good to meet you.

    hm,
i finnaly got my chance to start fencing this yr due to starting high school.
but ive wanted to do it since, 6 yrs ago i guess.
when i started playing the violin, u know with kids in orchestra how they cant resist poking ppl with their long bows.
i though how it would be so cool to learn to defend and attack properly.
and the fact i have always been facinated by medievil stuff etc.
now i have started fencing i cant get enough, once a week at school is to short.. "sigh"
oh well its the best i can do at the moment.

    Why I started fencing

I started fencing coz my big bro used to fence when I was little (about 2 or 3) and I'd spend most weekends watching him fencing. Then he stopped, and about 10 years later, I saw Sabre lessons advertised in the news paper, so that's how I started, but I'm now an epeeist.

What I love about fencing: the fact that you can hit people you REALLY hate with a long thin piece of metal... ...no, it's just fun, I've found a new thing I like about it though, coaching beginners... ...very satisfying.

Anyway, I like the whole 'fencing community' thing, and the strategic thing... ...I just love fencing!

It's a good way to make friends, and it's great being in a team, but not having to worry about passing a ball to someone or something.

    Cheers, Av.

    oh, yeah, welcome!

    Thanks!

Hey, thanks for all your replies!

I started fencing at the age of 9. It was my mother's idea and I was all for it. But when I became a teenager my interests changed (stupid little girl :-) and I gave it up. Years later I watched fencing on TV and decided to fence again. (10 years later)

    No regrets!!!!

And I'm surprised that there are fencers from Australia as well.
Thought its too hot for fencing

    Bye Albatros

    Albatros,

    Wilkommen!

    I started when I was 15 - in 1965!
I joined the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards prog. = sort of like the President's Awards in the US. It's for a series of bronze, silver and gold prog. The intent is to keep teenagers occupied and out of trouble.
At the time, like all good Hong Kong Chinese kids, I was only doing badminton and cycling and some table tennis. since my parents have always bought us steel toy samurai swords when they travelled to japan, and I've even hit a neigbour's kid with a plastic scimitar, when I saw fencing is available as one of the "hobbies" I thought, "Hey, why not try it." I did it for two years in foil, then stopped because of the "O" level exam and emigrating to Canada, then I restarted in 1970 and hasn't stopped since.
I've also gotten involved in the administrative end of things.

    Hurray to "Why not!"

    PK
