| Ethics --- Cheating in Age Brackets? How common is it for youth to fence in younger age brackets? I know of someone fencing in a youth category younger than their age by changing their birth year. I had heard of this in other sports but hate to believe fencing parents would do this with their kids. Is this commonplace, does anyone besides me care, does anyone ever check birth certificates?
I am just wondering if I am alone in this and what should be done about it?
Thanks

| Agh You don't want that happening.
Make a passport check compulsory for entry.

| I know of one case of this occurring. Actually, it was to fence in an older category. Person was too young to fence in the older category. Massaged the age (don't know how) to be able to. Then suddenly, the person was Y14 for an awful long time.

| Some people will do anything to see that their child is given every advantage.
I would be surprised if this were not happening somewhere in fencing.
As for what to do about it ...? You would want to be sure of your information before making any accusations. Perhaps suggest to a division official that they ask for confirmation of ages at the next tournament.

A kid can fence in an older category but having points in the next youngest. Some Y10 fencers can fence cadet events in National Competitions.
It is actually better to be younger in older events that older and not able to fence youth events.
Anyone doing that is missing the point....

| I almost wish there was a way to cheat so I could stay in Cadet for a long time! =) But i don't really see the point because when you do well a competitions, it's because you've proved your skill in your age-group, or Rating group or whatever, not because you're beating up on little kids!!!

| Rats! They're on to me!
I knew it was only a matter of time before they noticed a bearded 40-yeard old guy regularly competing in the Y12 women's sabre.
But cripes! It wasn't like I was making the finals all that often...
