banned drug: pseudoephdrine, alternatives before Jan. 1, 2004?

OK people, I didn't realize this until I was checking it today that sudafed (pseudoephdrine) is a no-no for comps. Does anyone have any alternatives for colds/decongestion?

I know it will be taken off the banned drug list come Jan. 1, 2004, but I need something for the NAC this weekend. Ugh.

If for whatever reason I would be tested after competing in the Div I this weekend and there is no alternative, what amount can I take prior to the comp that would not be detected?

I really don't want to have a box of kleenex next to the strip. drip, drip, drip...sniffle.

Most cold medicines have various strengths, and the weaker ones generally don't have any banned substances. The Canadian Council for Ethics in Sport has a booklet in pdf form here: http://www.cces.ca/pdfs/CCES-PUB-DrugClass-E.pdf

It lists both banned and allowed cold medications ... permitted decongestants are down around page 29 or 30. Unfortunately, "non-drowsy" cold medicine almost always contains banned stimulants.

Oh! And seeing as it's a Canadian list, and you're not in Canada, you should doublecheck it all. While I'm fairly certain that the same substances are banned, this list has brand names, and it wouldn't be surprising to see different medicine marketed under the same name in the States.

I take guaifenisen to prevent and correct sinus congestion and headaches before and during tournaments. It's the active ingredient in expectorant cough syrups. Whether stuff is in your lungs or your head, guaifenisen helps thin it out. If a runny nose is your main problem, then it probably won't help, but if you're stuffy, it might.

I found out about it one time when my doctor gave me a prescription in pill form for bad sinus congestion. Since then, I've stuck with over the counter cough syrup, but I'm careful to get the kind that's just guaifenisen and doesn't have the cough suppresant ingredient, too.

I can't wait till next year when we don't have to worry about it.

HTH,
Susan

I have chronic allergies and take Flonase (a nasal spray, steroidal) for my sinus problems. It's prescription and permitted with a doctor's note. See the anti-doping Wallet Card at http://www.usantidoping.org/files/WA...D2003FINAL.pdf (you'll need to zoom in, the print is tiny) for a list of prohibited, restricted, and permitted substances.

Thanks all for the replies.

I think I'll pack some Claritin and guaifenisen. Looks like my best options given the situation. Can't wait for 1/1/04!

Peach, thanks for the link...forgot that they listed permitted meds.

I was reading through the rule book last night, (no I could not find another book to read darnit) it will knock you out.

I found out that if you call the anti doping number and give your name, or send an email with your name, they keep a record of that. So if there is a question on the drug test, they know what they told you. I was asking about Ambien which is supposed to help a person sleep. It was allowed and the person told me it was not a banned substance.

If you have any questions do call the number. They can answer them with authority and you will not have it come back and bite you in the butt. 1 800 233-0393.
