Array I wish I could have been there to see! When I found out she was Russian & had attended a Russian fencing school, I thought that was SO interesting. To think: REAL coaches! I have yet to see her fence, though. Off the strip she's a sweetie. I'm glad she's been visiting Schoolcraft. We're happy to have her. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array She's got great moves, and kicks serious butt fencing men or women. It should be fun to watch you fence her since you're back in competition now. I'm also looking forward to seeing her against Ann Austin at the Michigan championship if that comes to pass.
That last part though about how it would be to have real coaches, are you saying your coaches now suck or what?
Mike -

Array I'd never even imply that my coaches suck. However, they are not paid professionally to coach me. Jim Vesper is a coach at U of M, true...but he's committed to THAT group. Marlin & Mike are fencers who have taken up coaching. Schoolcraft has no dedicated "on the books" coaches, except for Doug, who teaches the advanced & beginning classes.
And I don't know what my publicity schedule will be for the year, so you may or may not see me fencing. When I do get to compete, it's just for fun. I hope to fence Polina at Schoolcraft once in a while, if my schedule permits. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Array Sounds like great philosophy to be an also-ran, glad you're happy with it. But congrats to Polina for another 1st place win last weekend, coming out in 1st place in women's foil over Ann Austin.

Array Yes, Polina is doing Schoolcraft proud. I assume you know she registered with the USFA under Schoolcraft, & competes under our colors. I was pleasantly surprised to hear about it from her, as well as other club members.
I guess this thread needs to be changed to "Good Job Schoolcraft College Fencing Club." It's great to have my gang be a driving force in Michigan competitive fencing.
And I am quite happy living my dream. I only hope everyone can be as blessed as I've been. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

To Mike Harm:
This is Anne Austin. I just wanted to tell you that in the competition last weekend, I was fencing with the men and didn't have the opportunity to fence Polina. Perhaps we'll meet in the future.

For your information, Anne competed in men's foil last weekend not women's foil, so it would be impossible for Polina to place above her.

Array Oh great, just what we need, another thread that can get started on whether or not women should be allowed to fence the men's events when the two are seperate....

Array Tell 'em Annie! I knew that you & Peggy B. fenced in the men's division (to make it a better comp). I also know that you'll have fun fencing Polina. I miss you, babe!
Maybe if those who ACT like they know so much about what's going on would actually show up at tourneys to find out the truth, they wouldn't look so silly when they're proven wrong. Heck, I don't get to go as much as I'd like anymore, but I still know what's going on in the division!
And Mike, you need to look up the definition of "also ran". Because I certainly am not that. You must not know me as well as you've claimed to in the past. My shelves of medals & trophies, my son, my book (& everything that goes with it), my husband, my home, my friends & my family prove I'm not a failure. THIS horse is a success. And here's the kicker: even when I don't do as well as I should, at least I get out there & try. What have you done with your fencing? How many tourneys have you been in? Don't tell me you've been doing "other" things, because you will be guilty of being an "also ran" in your own warped definition. Better watch where you point you greasy finger...it will come back to poke you in the eye!
I'm tired of your jealous, petty, snot-nosed PUNK attitude toward me.
And Athos, you ROCK!

Array You two have been having these little fights for near a year and a half. Why don't you have a 15 touch bout and settle it on the strip? That would make this an interesting thread.

Array latenight,
It was supposed to be settled long ago, however Mike feels the need to continue this. He's all talk, no action. And I really have no interest in wasting my time with him at this point. I did not say ONE insulting thing to him on this thread, & believe he has some nerve saying what he did about me. I'm finished with him. Obviously, he can't be a decent person. If he wants to continue this sophomoric high school game, he can do it by himself. I've got better things to do than deal with a jealous twit. End of story. Have a nice life, Mike. In all sincerity, I wish you peace & happiness. May all your dreams come true.
Now, on to more grown up things. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

Well as to the topic of women fencing with the men, I see no problem in it (obviously) and the men at the Excalibur competition didn't seem to see much trouble in it either. Considering, I have a B rating, which is often helpful in forming an A competition, I think having women fence in the competitions is much more beneficial. It is also unfair to ask me to fence with the women, when usually less than 15 Women's foilists fence and therefore, others can't get a rating if I take first. With new regulations requiring a D rating for some national competitions, the more rated competitions we have (and higher) the better. If you're afraid of losing to a girl, then get over it! -

Array I'm fine with the men fencing on their own if that's how it's organized in advance - of course, I have been known to win a mixed event, so I do want to give the guys a chance to compete on their own level <grin>.
Heavens, I do love fencing. What other sport could a 50-year-old woman say that and be telling the truth? -
I would like to thank Anne and Peggy for
fencing with the men in the Excalibur Open
on Saturday. Not only are they excellent
fencers, but without them it would have been
very difficult to field an 'A' rated event.
Because of them I was finally able to earn
my 'B' classification after 15 years of
trying.
Thanks again, Ladies.

Array Moon and Mike,
A couple curiousity questions. I assume you are from the same general area. have you ever fenced each other? And where does this all come from anyway? If we are going to all read this stuff from time to time, those of us not from Michigan would like some background. Finally, how close are you two from Detroit? I will be there next week and wouldn't mind stopping by a club if I have some free time during my business trip Whatever doesn't kill you, is gonna leave a scar...

Array Frank,
Congrats! It's always great to achieve a long standing goal.
Latenight,
I have no interest in fencing him. We went thru all this before, & he never showed up. I have better things to do than waste my time. Schoolcraft is near Detroit in Livonia, but we only fence on Fridays there. However, there is a group that fences at Hosanna Tabor Lutheran school in Redford on Tuesdays. If you'd like more info, email me & I'll get it to you. When will you be in?
And I honestly don't know how this all started. One day, he & John Riddle decided to make nasty remarks about my club, my division & my self. I've grown tired of having to oppose their constant attacks. All talk, though...no action. Why he needs to make such personal comments is beyond me. "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind."

I've always been disappointed at how much political and personal infighting/animosity exist within the fencing community. The community is small, yet so divided. Similar Threads -
